When you have the Fuzzy crew at the helm, you’re always guaranteed a great ride. And once again they didn’t disappoint! What has become a well established Sunday afternoon event, Sounds on Sunday, definitely hits the spot.
Arriving just after 5.30pm with my sister in tow, for her first ‘Sounds’ experience, we just caught the end of Tim Sea’s set, where Shamus then took over for the next couple of hours as punters slowly dwindled in. I felt it was time to wander around and see how the other two rooms were playing out. In the chapel for the ‘Twisted Youth’ sounds, Wax Motif was finishing off the set to an ever-appreciative crowd although it wasn’t as packed as one might have liked, which is always the risk of being on so early. Then to ‘Chop Shop’ with the Vandals playing mainly for the bar staff as it was even emptier in there.
With the Greenwood having so many bars open, getting a drink wasn’t a hard thing to do, even when the venue started to fill up… As you do at such events, you’re always guaranteed to bump into old friends and have a catch-up, so a shout out Greg, his girlfriend Justine and crew who were having a right ol’ boogie in the courtyard. Keep on grooving! In the courtyard, Q45 was stepping up to the plate with the ever soothing voice of Amy B MCing in tune. This was the first time I had seen the two together; Amy worked her magic with their mix of Naughty and I was notably impressed with what I saw. Q45 was great as usual at hyping up the much-anticipating crowd for the arrival of Kid Kenobi, using such classics as The Prodigy’s Outta Space, remixed by the Audio Bullies in this case. Amy B was just the icing on the cake! The tempo of the evening had been set and the Kid arrived, already well under way with his tour around Australia and New Zealand to promote his new Sessions CD. The time had come. And it had been a busy weekend for sure… After starting in Darwin on the Thurs evening, Melbourne on Friday, Launceston on Saturday and then finally finishing of in Sydney for Sounds on Sunday.
Kid Kenobi hit the stage sporting a t-shirt emblazoned with the words “Fashion faux pas”….. Known as an error in style judgement, touché Mr Dessenberg! It occurred to me as I scanned around the courtyard looking at what most people were wearing that they indeed might be thinking they’d fallen victim… Ha! MC Shureshock announced that although it wasn’t a hip hop party, he wanted to see everyone ‘Jump around’ in a House of Pain fashion. This got the crowd going and jumping, hands in the air! Smiles-a-plenty. From here on in Kid had the crowd eating out of his hands, whilst he himself was jumping around behind the decks obviously having fun too. This is always something I like to see, as I’m sure it rubs off onto the crowd who feel like they’re more part of the whole experience. He then went back to where he’d been labelled as a breaks DJ and thrashed out ‘02 classic remix of Green Velvet’s La La Land for which he got a Dance Music Award for. Things just kept getting better for the crowd. Jesse then turned to Justice vs. Simian, which was then sent out through the speakers with the crowd singing in unison “we are your friends, you’ll never be alone again, well come on, well come on, well come on, well come on…” It was a moment! And a few songs later the ever loved Bloc Party’s Banquet ( Boys Noize remix) took my eardrums to ecstatic proportions! While things were going very comfortably in the courtyard I thought I should check on the other rooms to see what was happening there. Kato had finally managed to fill the ‘Chop Shop’ room, and as he was finishing up I headed over to Spoongheddi who was whipping the crowd up into a frenzy with The One by The Presets in the ‘Twisted Youth’ room, signalling a good finish for the end of their set also. Then they threw out a Beastie Boy’s mash up with Intergalactic and Inxs’s Need You Tonight which even had Kato the big fella moving and grooving too.
Back to the main man of the evening and I walked into Chemical Brothers’ Block Rocking Beats which made my feet wanna dance…. Finishing off his set with his own song The Bump, a tune he produced with fellow rising DJ/producer Hook N Sling. Once he’d finished off and the crowd began to wander home, a few stragglers said their thanks to the Kid, including myself. For my thanks I received a good old noogie on the head from him. Jesse himself is loved by everyone and despite his high profile and commercial success, he’s the last person to buy into his own hype and the first person to hang out after the gig for a beer and a chat. This showed when he attempted to get a troupe together for more partying. He was not done, he was up for more even though Shureshock wanted to go home by that stage. All in all everyone left with wide smiles across their faces and after seeing Kid Kenobi’s performance, he’ll be in with a fighting chance to reclaim his #1 title in the upcoming inthemix50 poll.
And with upcoming gigs down the snow across several states during August as well as a planned trip to the UK, life as ‘The Kid’ aint that easy!
