The crazy quartet that makes up the Bang Gang posse are widely known throughout Sydney’s party and music scene for throwing ridiculously wild parties, as well as for mixing together ridiculously great tracks to create a truly unique experience and sound. For the launch of their brand new mix compilation with Modular titled Light Sound Dance, the Bang Gang boys decided to return to their haunting ground of Arq nightclub off Oxford Street in Darlinghurst, to kick off their Sydney celebrations.
Ajax, Jaime Doom, Gus Da Hoodrat and DJ Damage were united again in full force on the stage of the main level of Arq and immediately after walking through the main doors, partygoers knew there were going to get a good time. For a reduced fare of only $15, Bang Gang devotees and newbies converged on the dance floor, threw their arms up seemingly in rapid unison, and clapped and sung along. There was also of course the occasional reveler demonstrating the ‘Bang Gang dance’. Whether that had anything to do with inthemix posting of YouTube videos online, we will never know.
Downstairs, Gay Bash were throwing a hoe down of fun in a more intimate setting, but upstairs was where the real fun was. After listening to the Light Sound Dance album a few days earlier, my ears were on the look out and I wasn’t disappointed. There were definite similarities between what we heard on the night and LSD’s ‘Black Disc’ and when the Adam Sky remix of La Musique came on around 1am, things really began kicking off in full force and the crowd around me went wild. People were even trying to sneak into the DJ booth to dance, but were quickly ushered off. I’ve got to admit that I may have even tried once and was successful, albeit for less than 20 seconds.
We then heard Fun Punch by The Bagraiders and a very good scattering of other tracks from their ‘Black’ disc. The night didn’t sound like a playlist of the entire new album though which was good, and there were some electro tracks that changed things up a bit. However the focus was on the new LSD album, and rightly so. The ‘Black’ and ‘White’ discs both offer quite a hard sound, and what we were hearing on Friday night was definitely quite rough around the edges. It was definitely dirtier!
With the signs ‘Light, Sound, and Dance’ plastered on the railings above, the words definitely lived up to what they proclaimed. The lighting system in Arq is arguably one of the best in the city, and the lasers would hypnotise even the most switched-on of punters. The Sound obviously was amazing thanks to the Bang Gang crew, and in my opinion the best part was the dancing. Naturally.
