This review comes to you with a level of sadness and one of general excitement as the institution known as The Funk Club, moves its Perth-side base of operations from one deco building to another. That’s right (as if you didn’t know) The Funk Club is now to be held at The Rosemount Hotel, thus ending their highly successful relationship with The Leederville Hotel.
Funkraiser was designed to not only have a majik send off for the evening, but also to raise awareness of the above facts and to give the non-profit collective some cash for which to start their fresh and sexy new night in North Perth.
As your erstwhile reviewer only has two ears and the same amount of legs apologies must be given to the dizzying array of artists that aren’t reviewed from now on. But as they say in The Castle “it’s all about the vibe” and I must say that there was one amazing ripple of cosmic goodness making its way through all corners of the Leedy.
Due to every ticket outlet in the known universe being sold out before the night had started their was already a large and cheerful early crowd to witness the rockin’ good times of The Typhoons, followed by resident deejay Loco Ren on the main stage (well, next to it at least). Both acts warmed the stage like people possessed, giving it their all in the name of funkin’ good times.
Upskirt Shazaam then took the floor and took it apart with some deep funk not unlike some of the big funk bands of old, such as Parliament. These guys have got the style, the grace and funk with deep heavy beats and a love of the funk to match.
Apologies to Charlie Bucket for then bailing to get out of the hot house for the relative modesty of the side room, but it was great to witness an almost all out dance comp occurring to the free flowing funky and Hip Hop beats of Finatik. Certainly with an air of awareness, the mixing was executed with the crowd to please in mind, with some great Jurassic moments thrown in for good measure.
Fdel also kept the crowd pumped with his usual stamp being put on wherever he plays with a great set of tight and uncompromising beats, samples scratches and other crate digging gold. With Armee doing his best to scratch from his gig in Mandurah, the set was precise and diverse.
Before moving back to the main room the downstairs inside was briefly sampled with Basschild v Mandy B being the personal favourite. It was also great to have a spot to chill out and listen to some great DJ’s while shooting a quick game of pool before heading back up to the now swollen sweat box that is the Funk Club Room.
Funk was the name of the game when The Funk Club House Band hit the stage to get the crowd worked into a funktastic frenzy with their usual energy and rhythm. Not much more can be said of this act that hasn’t been said and you can be assured that they will take their energy to the new haunt just up the road.
With what turned out to be a rather lengthy interlude downstairs, a return to the main room revealed the crowd going nuts for one of the best funk producers this city has spawned, Flow Dynamics. His set was tearing holes in the speakers as he unleashed a barrage of funk unlike anyone has seen from one single human. Few DJs or Producers in Perth let alone the world could match this performance as the crowd was given a history lesson of Funk and Break as the man in the tracksuit jacket dropped bomb after bomb. The only criticism being that their was no chance of a respite as funk classic blended into funk classic. Loops from Kool and The Gang, James Brown and other luminaries were mixed into a modern set that can only be achieved with the high tech setup that Flow brought to the table, or of course a crazy dee-jaying octopus.
It was great to hear so many old and new school tracks layered onto each other in such a way that kept the crowed pumped. Flow also displayed many of his trademark beats from his debut album as he wound up proceedings. Not a moment or riff was spared as the Funk Club’s residency came to a unique and dramatic crescendo.
As the crowd spilled out onto the street there was a feeling that it wasn’t the end but rather that this was just the foundation for this unique and special night to continue from now and into the future. With the place packed to the rafters and booty shakin’ like a tribal gathering, the future of The Funk Club looks complete.
