Plastique’s return was a truly a happening event. A great crowd attended from a broad cross-section of ages- people from both the art scene and club land. Just like the crowd itself, great variety in performance kept me entertained all night. DJ Mods kicked the party off,
then the chicks took over with DJ Tinker spinning some choice tunes, teaming up with VJ Yoiko. The visual element to this show was refreshing, with the highlight being the live performance by Replicas (formerly Supaphatass) and VJ Sustenance.

The upstairs room at FAD was packed ready for their sonic-visual onslaught, and they delivered. Vocal and guitar-driven synth pop, dark techno, melodic house and electro beats and bleeps… all played live with razor precision and blinding energy! The live visuals were exceptional with VJ Sustenance rocking it out, playing her v-tar to sync perfectly with their sounds. If you have no idea what a v-tar is, it’s a custom instrument developed by VJ Sustenance herself, and this
was its first outing. Basically it is a v-shaped electric-guitar shaped controller with knobs and sliders galore for visual play and plenty of rock posturing. Standing up as part of the band instead of crouching down behind a computer monitor, it rally broke the mold cast by VJs past. I recall such graphics as the departures
board at an airport laid on top of the geography of a rolling, hilly coastline. There was also a funky roller girl doing the Saturday Night Fever look over stop signs, traffic lights and cityscapes. This complete show was an absolute first for Adelaide despite this being the 2nd installment of Plastique).

The night continued on with DJ Derek Lang keeping the crowd pumping, followed by Amoeba Muzak kickin’ it and making my dancing shoes groove on and on. The night ended with some choice picks from DJ Lucky K tag-teaming with Mike Mannequin. I also caught glimpses of the bizarre toilet dance performances of Alison Currie… what a night!

Hey, Plastique crew… Keep putting on these great creative parties! An apt closing for SALA Moving Image festival. let’s hope we don’t have to wait til next year for the next installment!
