DNBBQ is one of those events you either love or hate. You can be in the former group and ignore the overpowering smell of vomit inside the Abercrombie, the dodgy bathrooms with the unlocking doors, the long queue for food and drinks and the grubby couches. Or you can be in the latter and get hung up on all the aforementioned quirks and complain the whole night. Lucky for me, I am in the former group because I love DNBBQ!
Sure, the two-hour plus wait for food was a joke, the mega line for drinks was annoying, the stench inside was bad but seriously, with friendly peeps all around, incredibly awesome music in my ears and a party-atmosphere that is lacking in most other places these days, it remains very hard to diss this event. The greatest thing about DNBBQ is that the crowd is really passionate, lacking in any pretentiousness and very happy to be there.
Upon arrival the courtyard of the Abercrombie had an incredible smell of BBQ wafting through the air, which was making so many bellies grumble and mouths salivate. The hip hop/reggae sound upstairs seemed to alleviate some of the agro that those who were more inclined to call it the ‘DNB-Queue’ were feeling. It had that real summery, chillout and smoke a pipe feel to it and everyone was relaxing, chatting and of course bopping away to the sounds. Foreign Dub were by far the favourite for the crowd and things really went nuts when they were on – awesome work guys!
Downstairs the clinging stench of the Abercrombie were countered with some really heavy, mad Dn’B beats that were making the crowd go nuts – especially from what was coming from Boot & Sook, Ritual and D-Tech. The crowd hype was amazing and it seems to be something you only ever find at Dn’B events. The dancing is so awesome – part shuffle, part ski-dance with a little bit of something else that makes you stop and stare sometimes. I love that feeling of walking downstairs, turning the corner and feeling the bass rattle my ribs that you get at a DNBBQ event.
To the promoters and organisers, thank you for such a fun, friendly and musically awesome event. To the attendees, you guys are fabulous fun and really make this event what it is, and BOY you can dance. And to the owners of the Abercrombie, PLEASE do something about that smell!
