Wow is all I can say about one of the best sets that I’ve ever heard in my life! If you ever have the opportunity to catch Mr. Oizo then run, don’t walk to wherever he is, even if it’s the public toilet at Flinders station! Yep, he’s simply that good.
It was a Sarturday night, and the Onelove crowd was beautiful and ready to witness something special. And the door staff were very friendly, which is a breath of fresh air at the moment in the current Melbourne scene. And when he hit the stage, it was incredible to watch Mr. Oizo weave such eclectic crunchy music, and to observe the crowd surrounding his DJ booth four-people thick, begging for more.
There were definitely a few heads that had come just for Oizo’s cocktail of proper electro, contrasting tunes like Dopplereffekts’ We Have to Sterilize the Population with his own crunchy glitch bombs from his Fcom EP Half Moustache and his new EP Transsexual on Ed Banger. It was also sprinkled with serves of dance floor heat like Technotronic’s Pump Up the Jam, Oizo’s classic hit Flat Beat and a personal fave of my own at the moment, Justice’s Phantom Part2 – Soulwax Remix.
The sound system was clear and strong, and easy on the ears. Oizo’s set was relentless and I was amazed that the crowd was reacting to such a tough, challenging and at times even punishing assault of the senses. Eventually he wound to a close with a massive roar of appreciation from the crowd, which was followed by pictures and autographs. The lone be speckled ‘Acid Jack’ played the best Acid Jacks set I’ve ever heard, and some of the Oizo magic definitely kept spilling on as the night drew to a close.
To give you an idea of how much I enjoyed Mr. Oizo, I was encouraged to trek all the way to Sydney to catch him again, where he drew crowds that queued with triple lines around the block! The Melbourne set was def the winner though: thanks Onelove, and keep bringing out excellent acts like Oizo.
