Just when I thought it was safe to spend my Thursday evenings at home on the couch curled up in front of the TV, along comes The Fuzz with another arresting line-up, this time featuring Lady Waks. So I once again found myself at The Como on a Thursday night and once again all my resolve to have a quiet night and not be nursing a sore head on a Friday quickly went out the window.

The sound in the dining area has been muted down to a level that makes conversation possible, so I didn’t realise that it was 8pm and the first DJ on the line-up, Double1Seven had started playing. But when the meal was over and I moved around to the bar area I was quickly appreciative of the funky little groove he was playing. Some personal highlights from his set included remixes of Stanton Warrior’s Pop Ya Virus and also Royksopp’s What Else Is There.

Lady Waks arrived at The Como at 9.30pm, and stepped behind the decks having literally come straight from the plane. She opened her set with a remix of Salt n Pepa’s Push It that had me immediately looking around for birthday girl and ITM personality Megs to dance with. Alas, I couldn’t find her and, deprived of a dancing partner, I hung back and nursed my pint for a while, until the opening strains of Minimal dragged me out on to the dance floor.

I wasn’t the only person who couldn’t resist dancing to this track, and once I started I couldn’t stay off the dance floor for the rest of the night. As the intensity of the set picked up, so did the craziness from the crowd. The enthusiasm of some people was such that The Fuzz posters had to be taken down from their stands!

Lady Waks played a killer set that included tracks as diverse as Roots Manuva’s Witness (One Hope), the Micky Slim remix of Jump Around and a very funky mix of Peter Bjorn and John’s Young Folk. The crowd was obviously enjoying themselves throughout and there was a contagious party vibe to the evening. Despite her jet-lag, Lady Waks rewarded the dance floor faithful with a warm smile and a cheeky punch in the air as she finished her set.

The final DJ on the line-up was Garnt and he finished out the evening with another great set that included the Bass Kleph remix of Freak Out. By this stage of the evening there were plenty of people in the room who were going to be nursing sore heads the next day, but the music was great and nobody wanted to go home. But unfortunately it was a school night and at midnight the party was over.

It was another fantastic night at The Fuzz, which has consistently featured some great local and international acts over the past few months. I particularly like the fact that admission is free. I hope the awesome line up and music continues over summer because I’ve already got my eye on the best table in the beer garden at the back of The Como!
