I hadn’t been to Home Nightclub since it transformed into Famous on Saturday night, so I was fairly eager to see what shape it and taken and what sort of crowd it was drawing. When I arrived I took the time to wander around and get used to the new layout. It looks a bit ‘unfinished’ due to temporary walls still being up: the wooden steps idea downstairs great though, and I spent some time sitting down observing the night unfold.
John Glover was first DJ to play. I have seen John a fair few times and this was definitely not his finest. I do though, think it is fair to put it down to the fact he was trying to read the crowd (like any good DJ will) which was SO varied, it would have been difficult to get them all dancing at once. Most people were congregated near the bar and only a few of them were dancing at that point of the evening, so I thought I would go give some ‘dancing support’ to the DJ. He dropped a remix of a 50 Cent track remixed to a dirty house beat: definitely not the best remix and it didn’t exactly go down well with me, but it got a few more people moving. He kept his set deep and high on bass, with a slight hip hop feel: even though I can say that his set was not one that I personally got into, there were people there who obviously dug it and there was nothing but A+ quality in the deliverance of the tunes.
By the time John’s set was finished, the place was getting a little more packed. Grant Smillie took over and I was curious to hear how he would lead the crowd, as I have not seen him play live before. I did my research before arriving and was expecting to hear a huge TV Rock style set. And Grant was VERY good. It’s easy to see why he’s got so many CDs in the stores, and also rated one of Victoria’s favourite DJs in the inthemix50 poll. He entertained, with his charisma shining through over the flashing lights. He was very ‘into’ the crowd and kept winding them up with grinding beats that meant even the smallest sparkling dress was eventually up and moving. He played a varied set, but managed to keep it all together so his individual styling came through the speakers. He did a stand out job for a place I imagine would be difficult to DJ for.
Hook n’ Sling then began to close the night, and kept in his tradition of being highly energetic. He is one of my favourite DJs and I love his outstanding talent and deliverance. Anthony’s style is very unique, and it’s quite easy to see that his career is about to lift even higher. He mixes with such ease and he’s one of the rare DJs who does broken beats the way I like them! I was very disappointed that by the time his set was playing, it was already the wee hours of the morning, and I had to drive home and get some sleep.
All in all, it was an OK enough evening. I didn’t totally love it, but I can see why people drive a few hours from the Coast or the like to come there. It has the vague feel of your ‘big sparking’ superclub, and is in a great location of course. The DJs were of great quality, but I have to say, the surprise of the night was Grant Smillie, as he was really able to shine as a stand out individual.
