Who said house music was dead? Not likely!! Ministry of Sound’s Housexy brand pulled of a music extravaganza last Saturday night at the Arthouse. The latest CD which is mixed by Alan Thompson and Wei-Shen, it’s a must for any house lover’s collection, so it was great to see both artists hitting the decks to mark its release.
The Arthouse was well into party mode when I arrived at 11pm and one of Sydney’s best known DJs Shamus was rolling the decks with complete precision in the main room. The crowd was loving it as usual, and this is exactly what I like about this particular DJ. I have never heard him play a crap set. He pays attention the crowd and really plays FOR them, not just for his own enjoyment. He always brings out the best in a dance floor and I must admit a little sigh of relief comes over me when ever I see him on the lineup of a club or party – you are guaranteed a great time whenever he is playing.
Wei-Shen was up next. Mixing the second for the Housexy Spring Edition, I was interested to see what he would come up with. Born in Melbourne and just a baby at 27 years old, this house music lover is going to go places with his particular style, throwing out some old and some new tunes it was great to hear some variety in his work. Bob Sinclars’ Tribute and Jamie Lewis’s Unity were highlights, and I have to say his mixing ability is incredible. He just seems to find the right moment to move you from one great tune to the next. His fortnightly radio broadcast is knows as the ‘Those Usual Suspects Radio Show’, and from what I have heard are incredible and always bring out the latest and greatest.
Grabbing a drink before Mr. Alan Thompson came onboard, I shot next door to hear some funky disco being played by Silky. While I appreciate the fact that disco is lots of fun, I’m not sure I could stand more than an hour of it – times have moved on from that genre of music I’m afraid that after about 15 minutes I took off to the main room to have a boogaloo to the Housexy champion himself.
Eddie Thoneick’s Deeper Love and Jean Claude Ades’ Some Day belted through the speakers, and we all jumped for joy. This set was incredible, and the crowd’s hands were in the air more often than not. By 4am my entourage and I were buggered and regretfully sauntered out on to the street: but we did however, have the funkiest beats in our heads and fortunately the CD was in the car awaiting our trip home.
Housexy Spring 07 is an essential component of your partying equipment, and of course the Arthouse is a fantastic venue. All in all, a great night was had and you could tell by the sea of hands still on the dance floor that it had a ways to go yet.
