Having remixed the likes of The Prodigy, DJ Antoine and the Global Deejays there’s no bigger name in the electro scene than that of Klaas. Canberra was treated to an up close and personal encounter with this superstar of in-your-face electro, accompanied by some of Lot’s usual suspects in Dave Norgate, DJ Hubert and of course the Aston Shuffle’s Vance Musgrove.

By 12:30am, Lot was looking like it does on most Friday nights at this time with few numbers on the dance floor. This trend was soon bucked when Dave Norgate stepped things up a notch introducing a couple of sure-fire favourites with Will Bailey’s Ill Behaviour and Armin Van Helden’s I Want Your Soul.

Joining Mr Norgate was Pang’s own DJ Hubert and by this stage the Lot dancefloor was in healthy shape. Keeping those on their feet was the likes of some the biggest tracks doing the rounds at the moment such as my personal fave Bump Uglies (Stupid Fresh Mix) by Bass Keph and Dirty South’s Let it Go.

By this stage of the evening, considerable anticipation was building for the night’s main event and it wasn’t long before one of today’s most distinguished electro producers graced the decks. By distinguishable, I’m referring to his sound. Smooth melodic vocals that lead a listener into a false sense of security before hitting them in the face with a burst of massive electro bass: it’s pretty much the formula that Klaas has successfully adopted. If the above formula is why you attended Klaas at Lot 33 on Friday night then you weren’t disappointed. Klaas banger after Klaas banger was pretty much the format of his show. Only could Klaas manage to maintain this amount of energy in a two-hour set without the need to bring it down then build it back up again. Up up and up is all Klaas appeared to know, and why not, ups gotta be better than down right?

Overall one got exactly what one would have expected from this German sensation: namely, a face full of bass. Pulled from his bulging bag of original and remix production work was the likes of DJ AntoineThis Time (Klaas Mix) and of course Klaas’ newest single The Way. Most noticeable was that those in attendance seemed to be genuine Klaas fans, sincerely appreciating his performance which transcribed into a great mood over the dancefloor.

The mood remained for the appearance of Canberra’s own Vance Musgrove (one third of The Aston Shuffle) who inherited a healthy dancefloor and managed to keep it that way. There was really no opportunity to catch your breath when presented with tracks such as my other personal fave (I’m allowed two OK!) Surkin’s Radio Fireworks (Riot in Belgium Second Mix) and Daft Punk’s Harder Faster Stronger (Deamau5 Mix).

The opportunity to experience the soul-shaking frequencies of Klaas up close and personal on our own patch here in Canberra was a privilege. Kudos to Pang and Subsumo for managing to attract the German maestro to our humble backyard. Before Klaas it was Deamau5, where to next?
