Mild Sunday afternoons at the infamous Cottesloe Hotel, affectionately known as ‘The Cott’, has been experienced by nearly all in our humble town. C’mon, we’re all guilty of having at least one drunken moment there. On this particular Sunday a new flavah of style was organised by the Destination crew. This flavah that is being spoken of is the London export known to us as Cut La Roc or, Mr Lee Potter.
On arrival there was a typical elongated line curling around The Cott comprising of young tanned boys and girls with their colossal sized sunglasses. Downstairs was pumping as usual, however listening to the conversations upon entry to upstairs of The Cott, most of the people were not aware of the $20 entry fee nor were they conscious to the fact that one of the world’s best scratch masters was to spin later that night. Suffice to say, they did pay their way.
Local house specialist Damien John played a funk filled groovy house set which was highly appropriate for the beach side mood that everyone was in. At this time, being about 5pm, most of the punters were standing around enjoying their alcoholic beverages, casual conversations, lounging on the couches and standing on the balcony; benefiting from the gorgeous sun.
Up next were The Signal Drivers, Mark and Pete who played in the extended room which was previously blocked off by a purple velvet curtain. By this time the room was semi packed and the event was heading towards capacity. They played a combination of electro and electro’s sub genres, as well as a minimal amount of minimal tech. Some tracks that were spun on the decks by the main Destination boys were Rob Reng’s Superflex, NAPT’s Intergalactic and “CEO of HOUSE”, electro producer Miles Dyson’s very own Daddio.
By the time Philly came on stage the event was sold out. The crowd were definitely up for a boogie and the vibe unquestionably changed as the beats were pumping. Philly’s set certainly warmed up the punters for the next spinster in line; he churned out crowd favourites such as Soul of Man’s Trouble which was a Deepcut remix and Shut the Funk Up produced by Refunk, which quickly filled up the dance carpet.
The afternoon progressed to night as sun was slowly setting and it was 8pm; god bless day light savings! The main man Cut La Roc was next in line to finish off the crowd, and he did not waste any time and scratched his way into the set which got the punters going and the rest of the folks swarming into the already compacted room. He started of with a traditional break twist then out of no where he slammed down raw edge electro tracks. Once the electro started the public immediately stepped up their groove to another level and the cheering started.
It would be unrealistic to name all of the tracks that Cut La Roc incorporated into his set but to name a few, he did play the very grinding electro track by Justice, Phantom PT2 (Soulwax remix). His very own infamous production Nemesis and a bootleg electro remix of the Prodigy’s classic Out of Space; that particular track was off the hook and the there was a definite case of hands in the air.
Overall it was a fantastic turn out for a Sunday night gig. It was an absolute sell out and Destination managed to pack 300 boys and girls plus their sunglasses upstairs. Lee Potter exclaimed that he loved coming to Perth and was really pleased with the crowd as they were musically versatile and really into it. The night wrapped up at 10pm and a mass exodus could be seen on West Coast Highway. The people will now confront blue Mondays and back to slaving for their wage for yet another week.
