The first thing I noticed on Sunday morning when I (quite unwillingly) emerged outside was bright sunshine and blue skies, which was quite frankly a stark contrast to the previous day of mud dwelling madness and torrential rain that was Foreshore. It was on this day of perfection that the first of the fortnightly Sunday sessions kicked off at Minque, cementing the fact that summer is definitely here. The day was characterised by a series of uplifting, crowd pleasing, and dance floor appeasing beats, which complemented an afternoon of cold bevvies in the sun.

Quite the contrast to pouring rain the previous day, Sweet Sundays began with a chilled atmosphere and sunny skies. Officially starting at around 1pm, Mikah Freeman began proceedings with some nice laidback beats and tasteful cuts of raw electro, funk and house. Around 4pm more people rolled up in time for Hubert’s set which was slightly more energetic, perhaps giving an indication of how the evening would amp up. By 6pm things were cooking along nicely, with Shunji kicking off a little later into the evening with tasteful tunes which would set the scene for John Glover’s set.

By the time it was dark Minque had filled up nicely and a decent crowd had amassed for John Glover, which was essentially the highlight of the day/evening. His precision on the decks can be directly attributed to his years of experience, his eclectic list of influences and the regularity of his gigs. The man is a complete professional and it was a pleasure to be on the listening end of his craft. It was also tastefully executed, with the right amount of scratching and cuts which didn’t develop into an ego driven frenzy, which is painful at the best of times.

It was apparent that there were a few people in my position, who were quietly licking their wounds from the previous day, and who – also like me – believe in the power of hops and yeast as a cure-all to the tragedies of self infliction. Good thing then that all four DJs were considerate of said sensitivities and their tunes were very much suited to the relaxed (if not hurting slightly) atmosphere. Having said this, it was kind of unrealistic to think that a decent crowd would gather by 1pm and thus give whoever was playing the first set due attention. In my experience, playing to an empty room blows, and so perhaps starting it later in the afternoon would be beneficial to patrons and performers alike.

That being said, it was only the first of these fortnightly sessions to be held over the coming months, so hopefully in the next couple of weeks we’ll see a bigger turnout, as it would be a shame to miss the great line up of acts the Sweet Team have in store.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
