Adelaide hot-spot Electric Circus saw prolific house DJ/producer/all-round-legend Jay-J swing into town on the weekend for his ‘Soul Summer Hype Tour’. Those who came were treated to a tasteful set of delicious, dance-floor driven beats.
In the game since 1995, Jay-J has had more than 120 releases to date and is probably better known to local house enthusiasts for his collaborative efforts with vocalist Latrice Barnett. With so much experience and knowledge, Jay-J instantly adapted to the crowd and exceeded expectations. He appeared relaxed and at ease as the dance-floor took off. His efforts were focused on the crowd, ensuring a good time was being had by all. Feet were moving and arms were waving as everyone appreciated the quality of music that was on offer.
Saturday night regulars seemed to make up the majority of the crowd, but as I chatted my way across the room it was clear there were just as many people specifically there to see Jay-J. Either way, we must have done something right as Jay-J told me that Adelaide is “always one of the sexiest, best looking crowds in Australia”. Oh yeah! Nice effort, way to work it.
Electric Circus really does seem to be the place for quality dance music in Adelaide right now. With hot acts on a regular basis, you could easily just turn up any night and you’ll be guaranteed a fantastic party. I was impressed with the level of professionalism at the venue. From the security greeting you at the door to the bar staff mixing drinks, it really was nice to feel safe and welcome.
After quite a sweat fest, Jay-J casually finished and simply sunk into the crowd. He was more than happy to mingle with everyone, posing for photos, talking to fans and enjoying such a great party. It was an awesome party, with friendly, easy-going people that were approachable and always had time for a chat. House music always seems to translate to a happy, feel-good vibe. Even the man himself was saying that the night was “full of fun, I can’t wait to be back”.
With house music reputed to be somewhat predictable lately (there being an electro version of everything with a fluoro clad following) it is refreshing to take it down a notch and appreciate a talented DJ dishing out quality beats to an up-for-it audience.
