Another Sunday and I am off to The Bedroom to check out Junior Jack & Kid Cream. The buzz for this event has been energetic around town in the lead up to Sunday night, and this will be my first time to check out a set from house music kings.
I get to The Bedroom around at 11:30 to catch Gerry Morales, a resident at The Bedroom who was laying it on thick with some cuts that had the result of a dedicated turnout of punters on the dancefloor. Time for the main event, Junior Jack & Kid Cream took over the decks for what turned out to be one ass-kicking set. I have never heard such a selection of tracks that featured such a wide selection of different instruments, with each track featuring a different example: one in particular that didn’t grab me so much was a track with a harmonica in it, that sounded like some New Orleans gator farm music. But the other tracks ranged from cow bells, samba drums to something along the lines of a bertie beetle clicker to countless white label cuts. There was a phat sample in one tack from Groove Is In The Heart by Dee-lite, but not the commercial remix track you may have heard recently.
One stand out track of the set came from what sounded like when when get home at 4am in the morning and your flatmate is watching the preachers on one of the early morning religious TV shows. I’ve got to get the name of that track, because it was a killer! Junior Jack & Kid Cream pulled off a stunning set and I will definitely be hanging for them to hit Surfers again. If they’re at your local then do not miss them, as after my first exposure to them I’m a card-carrying fan!
Joey Mojo, another star resident at The Bedroom, took the reigns from Junior Jack & Kid Cream to finish off the night off in style. Joey has a big following at The Bedroom and along with Gerry Morales, gets to play alongside some of the world’s best DJ talent. Sunday once again drew out some old faces not seen in along time and I defiantly have to thank the club for giving this ITM reporter the VIP treatment.
Any locals should get on the mailing list for the The Bedroom’s website, as they give away a select number of free VIP tickets to events: if you were on it you could of seen Junior Jack & Kid Cream for free. Trust me, the effort would have been worth it!
