Sunday the 23rd of December saw FAD Bar host the third instalment of local electro/tech, visual spectacular Plastique. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of experiencing this diverse and cutting edge creative showcase do yourself a favour and get along to the next one.

As we arrived the dark, industrial tech grooves of Tinker were pumping the upstairs room. At this stage there were noticeably less punters than the last Plastique, which could have been due to the close proximity to Christmas or the fact that the last one was also the closing party for the SALA Festival and received a considerable amount of press. Those who were in attendance made up for those who missed out, as a few dedicated groovers warmed things up on the dance floor to Tinker’s infectious beats.

Soon Replicas took to the stage and the increasing crowd scrambled to get up close to watch the live electro action. Previously members of Supaphatass, these guys are all accomplished musicians that have been blending electronica with real instrumentation way before LCD Soundsystem were on the scene. With VJ Sustenance and her incredible V-tar creating a visual spectacular, along with Replicas fresh approach to making beats that you can’t help but move to, this is an interesting show that is well worth catching live. Sustenance creates a visual feast that fits seamlessly with the music due to the fact that she actually jams with the band. She is essentially another member of the outfit, creating visuals in real time to add a whole new dimension to the Replicas experience. They have a great sound with a few catchy tunes that stick in your head for days. If these guys get the right kind of exposure great things could be possible for them.

Keeping things moving, Derek Lang spun a few quick tunes with some funky beats. Everyone had loosened up a bit now with some free flowing moves being pulled out on the floor. FAD has a nice floor to groove on. It’s never sticky and there always seems to be ample room. But the walls look crusty at the moment with the massive retro Ropars being removed leaving badly painted splotches of black everywhere. This kind of changed the cool and cutting edge feeling of the evening and made it a bit dirtier.

With a modest but enjoyable set coming to an end Amoeba Muzak hit the stage with his infectious tech/house live show. It took me a while to realise that this guy wasn’t just spinning records, he was producing these awesome grooves live. It was a bit of a shame that there wasnt more of a crowd to appreciate this stellar set. A few tracks got the few punters on the floor cranking including Eye and Pepper.

With rumours of a venue change for the Plastique crew I can’t help but think this may be a good idea. FAD has a certain vibe that suits the visual element to this show. But it doesn’t seem that the tech, industrial, electronica fans in Adelaide are hearing about or coming along to this night. Which is a damn shame because for a small town we have some pretty kick ass talent!
