In Queensland – we’re constantly having a whinge about water. Our dams are too low, we can’t shower at the beach, we’re always screaming “turn off the tap”, sunshine has become boring. After all this suffering, mother nature decides to be a smart ass and pour down torrential rain for a couple of weeks leading into everyones favourite summer festival. Thanks mom! So with the venue giving Leed’s festival a run for it’s money in terms of muddiness, over 20,000 punters gum booted up and headed for the beloved Gold Coast spit in search of some much needed summer two-stepping.
Although I like to see as many acts as possible at festivals, it always eventuates that I become captivated by a handful and end up missing out on others – this year was no different. After doing the mandatory walk around like a lost parrot routine I made my way to the first act – Malente. A few squelches from the German bass maestro instantly made me forget about the mud that was matting my carefully straightened fringe and had me fist-punching the air in true rave form.
OK time to go get drunk, wait a minute – SPANK ROCK! Now I may be biased because I would easily give away my first born to hang with these cats, but man did they deliver! More booty bass than La Fwandah packin too much rump in her trunk. Amanda Blank (the female rapper from their hit tune Bump) was also their to get the guys wishing they had lowriders. Perfectly delivered rhymes, killer sound, Baltimore city music with the Gold Coast city crowd – can I get a hell yeah? (HELL YEAH!!)
OK this is getting ridiculous I need a beer, can I afford to miss the next act? Who’s next? Uff, Uff, Uffie of course! No chance. Partnered with her main man Feadz, the french duo had everyone going crazy as could be expected. The fleuro farm, the ravers, the indie kids, all hands in the air screaming “I’m ready to…”, you know the rest. Ed Banger stuff can always tend to do my head in after a few tracks, but the master Feadz knew exactly how to work this crowd – and then they let everyone jump on stage! Myspace was consequently flooded with “Me and Uffie just chilling on stage” photos the next day.
I decided it’s now or never, and a few beers later I was feeling like a million bucks. I managed to catch a little bit of Riot in Belgium, who did an ample job of pumping out the big noise, but weren’t enough for me to stick around. I’ve seen these guys heaps of times and always a brilliant job, this was no different, but time is scarce at festivals and I know I’ll be seeing these two electro kids sooner rather than later.
New Young Pony Club really didn’t do it for me either, I think taking the tempo down to this level was something I just couldn’t lend myself too at such an event. I’m exhausted and I think all these uber-cool synths are starting to sine wave my brain into oblivion. No, I can’t pike – are you seriously getting that old your going to leave at 8?
Wait a minute – I think we all know what time it is. Techno time. Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso to the rescue! I tend to get a little jaded when it comes to full on raving at festivals, you know, throw a few sarcastic faces and pretend i’ve been there done that. Well not this time – these two Swedish house nuts had this jaded reporter throwing shapes, hands in the air, all sorts – absolute quality. I really hope no-one took a photo of me though.
I’ll be honest, with the weather – Summafieldayze was going to have to be mighty good for me to give it the overall thumbs up. The once little festival has grown out of control of recent years and I thought I’d be the first to write it off for good. The overall verdict? Let me say that my inner-raver has been re-sparked and I’ll definitely be there again next year! Future/Fuzzy – you still rock!
