Brisbane’s dedicated house community were out in force last Saturday to get down to the best homegrown talent this country has to offer. Headed up by local heavyweight and one of Australia’s finest house producers DJ Freestyle, the Producers 4 event welcomed house talent from across the country for an upfront party that had the Alhambra crowd sweating up a storm until close.
Representing Sydney was Yogi of Random Soul fame, who is still riding high after he and production partner Husky’s EP topped the coveted Traxsource download charts last week. Joining him was Brisbane-born, Melbourne-based Ricardo Rae, who had the joint shaking with his jacking set around 2:30am while rounding off this stellar lineup was Perth’s own London-bound Ralphski and vocalist Kristie, who brought some sweet sensual vocals to the up for it, friendly crowd.
These four producers have cuts out on some of the most respected house imprints in the world – between them they’ve all released records on OM, Aroma, So Sound, Salted, Mutated and many, many more – the hype surrounding this rare gathering of Australia’s finest was building for weeks, and the four guys and Kristie didn’t disappoint. Set times went out the window. As Freestyle explained to me, this was above all an opportunity for four hard-working, like-minded producers to share the spotlight and relax together for the evening. Certainly, there was a ‘proper’ vibe doing the rounds of Alhambra on Saturday, reminiscent of recent Soul Heaven parties and sets from the likes of Marshall Jefferson there. Only these weren’t international guests; these were the best Australia has to offer and it showed.
Whether it be Freestyle dropping his acclaimed remix of Jordan Fields and Roy Davis Jr’s The Session with Yogi throwing down some vocals over the top, Ralphski and Kristie having the crowd in the palms of their hands with their smooth, sexy sounds or Ricardo Rae working heads into a frenzy with his heavy beats, The Producers 4 was one hell of a night.
In what was a weekend double header, these four backed up to provide more beats on Sunday afternoon at Watt at the Powerhouse in what was yet another fantastic event. Props must got to the Zero Hour Collective for taking on this landmark event and also to Alhambra for continuing to support Brisbane’s House community. With events like this, it’s safe to say the future of this often maligned, rarely understood genre is safe in Australian hands. Respect to all involved and when’s the next one?
