Supermarket live is an audio visual experience built around global images and the rumbling of broken beats, tending towards the liquid if you prefer chilled end of Dn’B. With a US tour under its belt and on the eve of it’s Adelaide Fringe Festival preview, I went along to check it out in its entirety. The brainchild of Adelaide’s Dan Monceaux and Emma Sterling, Supermarket has risen from idea to reality in a ridiculously short amount of time. Granted a film makers residency in Buffalo, New York they packed their cameras, laptops and ideas and got to it. Using original footage shot through their tour of the US, back home in Australia as well as purpose chopped archival footage courtesy of their US hosts they have created an audio-visual immersion.

On screen elements of modern life such as cars, trains, show rides and modern day life in the US are chopped with footage of native tribesmen from around the globe and early 50s-era movie and TV footage. Melded together with an ode to Ugh Boots and excellent geometric shapes made from something as simple as film runoff, it is broken into specific segments to capture your eyes. While all this is occurring the funky rumbling bass connects with the footage, from rising sunsets to stuttering shots of footwear and rolling geometry the original score of Monceaux fits perfectly. Perhaps wrongly showcased, at least until it is adapted more to suit the environment, so far in clubs the Fringe provides the perfect locale to enjoy it.

This is an art piece that will constantly expand with the duos travels, new footage and music combined with new techniques meaning this years Fringe is your only chance to see it in its current form. Like a more credible version of Video Hits, it offers something for the eyes and ears, definitely worth checking out. And you’ll be able to catch the Supermarket experience at the Mercury Cinema during the Fringe Festival on Feb 28th, March 1st and 2nd.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!

If you are down with Ninja Tune-style beats plus some impressive visuals. Check Dan and Emma's show. They are a talented couple - bastards :)
