As we arrived at Ffour we were greeted by the daunting image of Detroit’s one and only DJ Bone, peering over us from a promotional poster for the evening ahead. “An intimidating man with steely like prowess,” my friend waxed, knowing I was writing the review. Upon seeing the great man meeting and smiling at people, all the while sipping on Australia’s finest (Crown Lager), my friend’s aspersions melted away. However for the rest of the evening his skills were never questioned.

Missing Mike Callander and Craig McWhinney’s warm-up sets was a disappointment, but Dave Pham and Sam McEwin only built on the work already done. Spinning some bouncing, bass-heavy techno that had the crowd whooping with delight, there was a crowd of 200+ techno fans salivating at the prospect of DJ Bone. The man didn’t disappoint.

Gliding towards the three decks like Poseidon rising from the sea, DJ Bone begun his set with commanding force. He moved between layered, melodic-like techno – switching between tracks and never missing a beat – through to Detroit style rhythms that had everybody grooving through to the end. It was a real treat, with criss-crossing and back spinning that had the floor marveling at his skill.

DJ Bone mentioned at his Sydney gig that two of the productions he dropped were written by his 11-year old daughter. If that’s the case then we have a real talent to look forward to in another ten years! Several rounds of ovation later and it was all over from DJ Bone, with Ben Cromack bravely taking to the decks with bumping tech, but sadly most chose to end a top night.

A few people could be heard muttering it was one of the best techno gigs they had ever been to, and I’d have to agree. The crowd was top notch, with everyone there to enjoy themselves. The turnout was great considering what other events were on that day/night (ahem, Good Vibrations), and the sound was impeccable. Ffour proved a great venue to host such an event. All-in-all, you’d be kicking yourself if you missed out.
