It’s a sad story but true – I was such a trash bag last night! So trashed that one, I got a little bit drunk; two, I stayed out way too late; and three, I slept in WAY too late for work. I was such a classy gal this morning, not only was I late for an early meeting, but I rocked up with a shonky head on my shoulders and a bowl of cereal in my hands as I busted through the door to work… So why I am telling you this? Now after you all shake your heads in shame at my questionable start to the working week, just imagine how fun it was the night before. As bad as it sounds, waking up with the feeling like I have just been hit by a train was totally worthwhile! In fact, I think it’s a very good measure of just how awesome a show Krafty Kuts put on at Sound Baked Sundays, the best place to chill on a Sunday afternoon.

The sun was shining and it was pleasant 20 degrees outside, way to go Canberra summer! After selling out the event prior to the day, it was no surprise that Trinity Bar was packed full of punters who were all smiles and ready to go with a drink in hand. On arrival I couldn’t help but notice the crowd filled with friendly faces. Even more attention grabbing was the funky beats coming from behind the decks; more formally known as the sounds of DJ Danielsan from Koolism, who carved it up into the early evening.

Now, my apologies go out to Shunji (who already knows he’s great and who later informed me that his set was awesome), Downtown Brown, Young Murph (USA) and D’opus & Roshambo whose sets I missed. However, I was given the low-down of how the early afternoon kicked off by some trusted and tasteful sources. Most gave it a ‘thumbs up’, stating that the “vibe was rather relaxed” and the music had followed suit. Others I had talked to made particular reference to Young Murph who they gave a ‘thumbs down’; apparently his “ego was rather large”. Interestingly, an ITM crew member said he was “awesome and hot”. Hmmm, I’m not sure what to say here. I’ll sit on the fence for this one.

A couple of hours had passed and I spent most of my time mingling with the punters, having a few drinks and getting into the swing of things. DJ Danielsan had done a great job of warming up the crowd, particularly when he busted out some breaks! The inclusion of a Stanton Warriors track caused movement towards the decks. People got up and started busting some moves; it was the perfect way to get the party started.

Meanwhile, things were getting started in a ‘not so hot’ way. The security had restricted access from the inside and undercover area of the venue from the stage area. This meant that if you wanted a drink or to use the toilet – you had to line up at the bottom of the stairs, waiting for people to move before you could line up inside for the bar or toilet. This caused a few words and dirty faces amongst the crowd, rightly so, as the queue at times took over ten minutes to move. Perhaps next time a few extra toilets or an additional bar could be added near the stage area to avoid problems (and the Liquor Licensing mob!)

It was at this point I noticed that it was going on nearly an hour past the anticipated starting time for the main act, Krafty Kuts. Nevertheless, the Brighton lad soon made an appearance, sending a swarm of party people to the decks like bees to a honey pot. Krafty got the wheels in motion with some crowd favourites like Jump Around and Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. As expected from such a highly proclaimed breaks DJ, Krafty put his own handywork into each track, scratching, tweaking and mixing it up with unique style. I oozed with excitement when he put together a tasty combination of the White Stripes track Seven Nation Army and the Stanton Warriors tune Shake It Up... Very sexy indeed (I think someone knows how to ring my bell!) One glance across the crowd gave me the impression that each and every other person loved it just as much as I did.

Now the hot summer set from Krafty Kuts did not end there. He continued to pull out some massive tunes, featuring tracks from Justice, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metric’s raw and energetic song Monster Hospital. After a fantastic two hour set, Krafty cast a spell on the crowd by playing The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony. But wait, there’s more! What really took out the winning spot in my heart was a blend of Beatle’s classic Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds with (wait for it, you’ll never guess) Trigger Technology! It was such a surprise. I was completely startled, yet left with a feeling of total satisfaction. One would think I went home with Krafty! After such an awesome set, I’m sure all gals and guys alike were in love and wanted more.

It was now getting into late and thoughts of work and sobering up came to mind. As you’d remember from my opening statement – I was a trash bag, and so as you could imagine, I continued to ride that drunken train into the wee hours of the morning. The crowd had become a bit smaller and the action moved inside, however, the energy was sky-high as DJs Michael O’Rourke and Fonz kept the good times coming for all who dare to stay out so late on a work night. Things went crazy (in a good way); the Trinity Bar staff were dancing on the bar, even the manager got behind decks and spun some sounds. All in all, a corker of a night and what a way to do it!

There may have been a few glitches, such as the toilet lines… but honestly, what did everyone come for? Number one, the music and number two, a smashing Sunday. I know I got what I came for; as well as a complimentary hangover! As I said before, it was all worth it! Kudos goes to Lexington Music and Landspeed Records who organised such a fantastic line-up and to Trinity Bar for letting us come and play. Good work and thank you! Now kiddies, I hope you learnt something today. How you feel the next day is the very measure of just how good the night before was… I feel fantastic!

KK ripped it up at BDO this year. I was disappointed I couldn't make it to this. "What really took out the winning spot in my heart was a blend of Beatle’s classic Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds with (wait for it, you’ll never guess) Trigger Technology!"... Tricka Technology?
