Due to my dedication to a certain local sports team, I arrived late at the Cottesloe Hotel and had just enough time to grab a beer and catch the last ten minutes of the Signal Drivers’ set. Fortunately this was enough to dispel my blues and get me in the mood for some electro mayhem from the main act of the evening Miles Dyson.

The first sight to greet me on the dance floor was three guys going nuts and chest-bumping off each other. In fact there were a lot of people doing their utmost to show that indeed, they could dance, and I’m using the term “dance” very loosely here. One little video gets some notoriety thanks to the internet and suddenly everyone has to emulate it? Oh well, all fun and games.

I’d heard so many good things about Miles Dyson’s earlier performance in Perth that I thought there had to be a bit of slight exaggeration going on. You know how it is; sometimes a production guru isn’t all that crash hot up behind the decks in front of a live crowd. I’m happy to report that there was no exaggeration. He was a veritable whiz behind the decks, with fairly flawless mixing (at least as far as I could spot) and the energy of the set and the man himself was just relentless. It was apparent throughout the set was that he was having just as good a time as the crowd. Given that he doesn’t drink alcohol and abstains from other recreational stimulants but “loves to party,” he must have some kind of symbiotic relationship going on with his audience. At times, when he was standing behind the decks with his arms and hands spread wide, he appeared to be literally feeding off the energy of the crowd.

Early on in the set I heard a snippet of his remix of 30Hz’ Daddio, but he was just teasing the crowd, saving the full rendition for later in the set. Another early highlight was an unknown remix of Coburn’s We Interrupt this Program. It was an astonishing mix of blistering electro and, so I’m told, ‘fidget house’. Periodically he threw in tracks that would normally have me calling for some cracker biscuits to go with my cheese, such as House of Pain’s Jump Around (Mickey Slim remix) and an unknown remix of Dead or Alive’s You Spin Me Round (Like a Record). Somehow it all worked. I didn’t quite know what to make of the remix of Cypress Hill’s Insane in the Brain but I still found myself drawn to the dance floor. In fact, the dance floor was jammed with smiling, dancing people all night and even those having a drink out on the balcony were have a quiet bop or toe tapping.

I was a bit surprised at the choice of a mix of DJ Assault’s AssNTitties as the final tune. I am firmly in the cringe-worthy camp but I know lots of other people at the gig really enjoyed this track. Unfortunately a Sunday gig meant a 10.00pm finish but judging by the number of people still milling around after the house lights came up, this was one party nobody wanted to end.
