Having missed Sebastian Leger at Future Music Festival last year, I was excited to hear that he would be playing once again in Brisbane, but this time within the more intimate confines of a club. Having recently indicated his dislike of the current electro sound coming out of France, I was well keen to see what kind of set he would deliver.

After being ushered through the doors by the gracious Penny Clark, I found I had arrived early enough to catch the final tunes of renown local DJ Murray Brown. Instantly, I found myself out on the floor having a dance to Fatboy Slim’s Star 69 : a tune I have noticed as receiving quite a bit of airplay resurgence on Nova lately. With his firm beats and phat bass lines, Murray played to the crowd and ensured that the floor was well warmed up in time for the main act of the evening.

And so, amid a torrent of blaring lighting, Sebastian Leger stepped up to the decks. Right from the start, the dancefloor was grooving. His set was quality tech house with an electro tinge added for flavour. Epidemic beats, full basslines and systematic vocals flamed the excellent system, as the audience responded with arms in the air and undivided attention his way. I was glad to see Sebastian stick clear of the current electro house trend and play a set seemingly intended more so for his discerning fans, though the ordinary punters were rapturously enjoying his offerings too. Playing his well known tracks such as Hit Girl and Aqualight as well as his Not to be Released Mix of Daft Punk’s Around The World, it ensured the crowd had their hands in the air at all times. While the dancefloor was not losing the plot, it was certainly moving to the definitive beat, and the fact that there was enough room to move made for an equally enjoyable time for all present.

With Nick Galea finishing the night off, those still keen to dance were provided with what they needed as his full beats and musical melodies penetrated our aural perceptions. The excellent VDJ system scorched itself onto the membranes of my eyes while the club seemed to bounce to its own special meter. So with Sebastian leading the charge against the popular French electro sound, it is certainly safe to say Look out Ed Banger. Thanks to The Met for ensuring a quality evening – Sebastian Leger delivered the goods!
