OK it’s not often I give myself a pat on the back, I’m not that sort of guy. But considering I managed to drag myself to this event after Q-Dance on Saturday night at The Arena, I think I’ve taken one for the team… so to speak. Having decided that sleep was not something my body needed between Saturday and Sunday night, I ‘dragged’ myself from our debauchery-filled house party and down to The Bedroom nightclub in Surfers to see one of the world’s finest house/tech/electro/minimal music DJ/producers Sebastian Leger, taking centrestage for one very, very big night! Post-event I think the word ‘dragged’ was probably a little bit too harsh, because if I’d known what the night had in store pre-event, then I would have been kicking down the Bedroom door at 9pm, busting inside to get a piece of the action.

The Bedroom nightclub is different to your more traditional nightclubs. Obviously there’s the mass of beds that corner every wall of the club, and then there’s the two distinctly different bars that accompany one end of the club each. I personally still can’t help but think I’m heading into my beloved Fever everytime I walk down those stairs, but alas Fever is long gone and The Bedroom is here, and here to stay. Apart from Platinum nightclub there’s probably no other club on the Gold Coast that is as proactive in bringing some of the world’s biggest and best artists to the ‘GC’. Complimented by some of Queensland finest resident DJs, The Bedroom has been making waves for the past year by bringing the GC an quantity of quality and on this rainy Sunday night, there was no exception.

After reading the reviews of Leger at The Met in Brisbane the week before as well as Sydney and Melbourne, my mouth was watering in anticipation of seeing for the first time one of my favourite producers play live in a nightclub in my backyard. Arriving close to 12 and the place was absolutely heaving due to the resident DJs. It might have been the fourth night in a row for some people on the Gold Coast, and the risk of the Magic Millions on Monday always could have always damaged the crowd, but the GC are (starting) to really know, and appreciate, quality music; so the crowd was there and ready to party.

Leger came on, and it was damaging from the absolute get go. In a previous interview with ITM earlier in the month, Leger had said he was sick of the ‘loud, noisy electro’ that has been so prominent from the likes of the Ed Banger label for so long. Instead Leger has gone down the (now well traveled) path of a blend of tech, minimal and progressive; and the results are devastating! The resulting set was one of the highest possible ilk. Grab a pen & paper and jot these down if you’d like to experience just ‘some’ of what I was lucky enough to stomp away to.

Uranus, Aqualight and Mars; (these are all tracks kids) were pieced in and around some of the hottest tracks in the world of tech, minimal, prog and dare I say it; electro. These included Lutzenkirchen Paperboy, Pryda’s new masterpieces Pjanoo and Europa, Arno Cost’s Apocalypse and of course touches of brilliance from the Frenchman himself with his immortal single Hit Girl, and his remixes of the quintessential Gazebo by Fairmont. It must be said that resident DJs Gerry Morales and Joey Mojo did a killer job either side of Leger in setting the mood and finishing the place off with some slick sets of sexy, sultry and downright damaging electro-house.

In finishing off and leaving a little bit after 4am, my legs and body were heading home for sleep. I could’ve just gone to sleep in The Bedroom I guess, but my own bedroom awaited. The Bedroom once again provided punters on the Gold Coast the opportunity to see one of the world’s very, very, very best artists in action. A full list of upcoming events can be seen on their website at www.thebedroom.net.au. I’ll support any ‘smaller’ club who puts its neck on the line and brings in the best the world has to offer. The Bedroom is one of these clubs.

Nice review, think Leger may have played a similar set to what he played at the Met.
