The promise to the beautiful creatures of the night who inhabit the glorious setting of Fortitude Valley was Ibiza’s dirtiest, smuttiest and most degenerate underground house movement; Filthy Gorgeous. And it was all set to go down at the classy and far-from demure Planet Nightclub. If you read no further, let me assure you, the promise was fully delivered upon.
Though I still had mixed feelings from the experience of the Climate Festival that day, I was determined to go into Planet without a preconceived idea or false expectations. A quick costume change from ‘festival casuals’ into my own interpretation of ‘naughty-milkmaid’ in the confines of a climate-friendly – but very small – Suzuki Swift, and I was finally ready for a night of sexy shenanigans and sleazy sounds (as the promo posters stated).
According to reports, Filthy Gorgeous is one of the most respected and fastest growing club brands around. Launched in July 2005 as a small party in San Antonio’s ‘West End’, Filthy Gorgeous have hosted parties at London’s Pacha, Honey Club in Brighton and Mezzanine in Mexico, as well as holding down a residency at Ibiza (and the world’s!) biggest club, Privelege, in 2006. Coupled with some of the hottest talent Brisbane has to offer, the night was certainly going to take a very interesting direction.
Upon arrival there was quite a line assembled, with a lot of gorgeous-looking people wearing very little, but bouncing about with childish-excitement. They were being tickled and teased with a very large, fluffy pink peacock feather, and moments later a scream escaped my mouth as the same feather slithered up my leg!
The lovely Stacey welcomed us through the door and wished us well as we entered the Filthy Gorgeous domain. Dominatrix’s in head-to-thigh lace, sexy school girls, Playboy bunnies, menacing meter-maids, voluptuous vixens and sensual sex-kittens graced the relaxed outdoor setting at Planet. Outside was relaxing with wooden decking, leather lounges and dimmed ambient lighting, it almost made you forget that you were in the middle of the valley. I was thrown into a chilled-out exotic island-resort atmosphere, all synonymous with the clubbing capital of the world; Ibiza.
I was tempted to stay and soak up the funky music outside, but the deep bass emanating the main doors was drawing this Planet ‘virgin’ inside. Uber-cool resident DJ Radaza was just finishing his wild set, and he had the punters whipped into a frenzy. Taking over was a man that epitomised Filthy-Gorgeous; Brisbane lad Matt Kitshon. Dropping track after track that could potentially render brain cells senseless, Matt was very much in the zone – demonstrating that he was there as much for the music, as for the people ripping up the dancefloor.
A beckoning wave from a devious-looking girl clad in a skimpy police uniform was all it took to get me on the dancefloor as Matt dropped in his own remix of the Potbelleez ‘Don’t Hold Back’. How very pertinent this song was as very few dancers were leaving much to the imagination. This was followed by Tiny Dancer by Marco Demark (Deadmau5 Remix), which had the crowd moving in synch to the rolling bassline. The music had us well and truly turned-on, so it was perfectly timed for a dozen rather filthy and very gorgeous tutu clad performers from the Zen Zen Zo dance troupe to come out, tantalising and titillating the club by strutting and slinking over the dancefloor.
With a bang, the much talked about Filthy Gorgeous DJs drew the crowd back into the dance zone. They served up steamy remixes of Wink ‘Higher State of Consciousness’, the edgy new song from The Presets, ‘This Boy’s in Love’, and a personal favourite The Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up’. From 2am onwards the Ibiza kings – Jamie Gittins and Scott Martin – were pumping out gorgeous electro house in a technically superb manner. Filthy Gorgeous had delivered their promise of bringing filthy sounds to a gorgeous place – what more could a Brisbane girl ask for in one night?
As we packed up to leave, the great music continued when DJ Wahoo dropped it down a level, bringing deep throbbing beats to resonate through the dancefloor. I flowed like a slow moving stream out the door, leaving only with a feeling of deep contentment. Planet had set the bar high, this is gonna be a tough night to beat!
