Regulars and newcomers of Academy were lucky to be graced with the presence of Tommy Trash. He brought his massive driving basslines and funky electro samples once again to the nation’s capital, all in aid of launching his new Ministry Of Sound Electro House Sessions CD. Anyone who saw Tommy Trash play previously would have known that they were in for a big one.
For those of you who haven’t seen the new look Academy, please get out from the rock you’re living under and check it out. The new entrance and black lights give the club a more underground, secret society feel. With the addition of the star curtain and the emo inspired sheets that hang from the roof, it makes the massive club feel that little bit more intimate. On top of this, the upper dancefloor is sectioned off, pushing the crowd onto the bottom floor. This reduces empty space and makes the club feel a lot more packed.
The crowd was slow at first, but like always Academy pulled through with the goods. By the time Trash took to the stage there was an outstanding audience of people ready to rock out. Tommy started off with some old favorites, including his funky remix of Jump Around, as well as his own tracks Slide and Swede Thing. He then progressed on to drop tracks off the Ministry album. One notable track that really got the crowd pumping was John Dahlback’s Blink; easily the biggest song of the night.
After Tommy trash finished up we were served up another notable set from Chris Fraser, who took things over and calmed them down a touch. During Fraser’s set I got a chance to catch up with Tommy and discuss his DJing and production. It was interesting to learn the story behind how some of his more exclusive remixes came to public attention, such as his rework of the Faithless classic Insomnia. Tommy said he was at a gig one time and someone stole his CD wallet! Tracks from the holy grail were then subsequently leaked. Tough break Tommy!
With parties like this at Academy, Friction is once again set to establish the club as Friday night’s hot spot for Canbbera.
