As I burst into The Family in my desperate search for warmth on a very cold Saturday evening, everything seemed to be heating up in the venue – although in quite a different way… people were causing a stire in anticipation of Ministry of Sound DJ’s Goodwill and The Potbelleez! With the latest edition to the Ministry of Sound Sessions series now on the shelves, it was time to show the Brisbane people exactly what sound the Ministry have to offer this year round.

Family resident Chris Wilson had the crowd primed and ready to go, and just as I grabbed my drink and headed for a decent vantage point Goodwill took the controls. We were away, and away in style, I must say that opening with a remix of Cut Copy’s ‘Hearts on Fire’ instantly captured everyone’s attention. Within a few minutes of banging house, Goodwill was teasing between samples of Daft Punk’s ‘Harder Better Faster Stronger’ and Buy Now’s ‘Body Crash’. It came across as a little sloppy, but the crowd didn’t seem to have a care in the world.

Settling in to some electro house, the traditional Ministry of Sound quick-mix style became obvious. Goodwill dropped the Laidback Luke remix of TV Rock’s latest smash ‘Been a Long Time’, followed by The Presets’ new bomb ‘This Boy’s in Love’. As the set moved on, the crowd was really diggin’ it, but all too often we were subjected to Goodwill’s voice on the mic. When he dropped the Utah Saints with ‘Something Good’, it really set the scene for Morgan Page’s ‘The Longest Road’ remixed by Deadmau5. Then, without further ado – no, wait, there was further ado…Goodwill’s introduction (argh!) – it was time to welcome the Irish duo The Potbelleez.

What a way to start their set, with the boys dropping the one and only ‘Don’t Hold Back’, with some brilliant scratching to go along with it. It was a fantastic intro and already proved to be the most enjoyable part of the evening. From this epic start, they moved through various tracks from their half of the CD release, with Sandy Vee’s ‘Bleep’ and Alex Gaundino & Shena’s ‘Watch Out’. The dancefloor got so busy that it almost wasn’t worth trying to move. This is when I realised having the DJs on the stage may have been a bad move. But, all of the Family patrons seemed to ignore the space issues, and they kept shifting their feet and screaming for more!

After hearing another track from the Potbelleez selection – their new follow up single ‘Are You With Me?’ – and waiting a crazy amount of time for a drink, 3:30am arrived and it was the end of the set. With a very interesting evening under my belt I walked out a little disappointed with the first set, however The Potbelleez performed fantastically. Now I’ll patiently await Ministry’s 2009 Annual.
