There was something in the air tonight. I felt so excited at the prospect of seeing one of my favourite bands, indie/dance darlings Cut Copy. I had seen them several times before most recently been at the V Festival, and they always put on a such a great show I was looking forward to seeing them in a more intimate venue of The Enmore. After some sneaky predrinks, we were in the right mood for the trio. We arrived at about 9.45 because we were there for only one thing. There was quite a large trendy-looking crowd around the front door, leather jackets a plenty but we managed to get in very quickly and without any hassles.

Reading descriptions of a Cut Copy show likened it to that of a lunar eclipse; the perfect harmony of celestial events that results in thousands putting down what they were doing to shed glittery tears of joy at the phenomena. And for the next hour that array of celestial forces were unleashed upon the unsuspecting crowd as the sun, the moon and earth were in perfect alignment and time stood still. And it was something truly spectacular.

Right on 10pm the lights went down and the trio emerged on stage, sporting their trademark fringes and kicked things off with Out There On The Ice. After this we were taken right back to the sounds 1985 when they played one of my personal favourites Far Away. If you have heard it, you’ll know what I’m talking about. The lead singer Dan Whitford was doing a great job of engaging and leading the crowd on this journey they had undertaken together. UU followed next and for a song that has a total of 5 lines, it truly got everyone pumped up and as the waves throughout the song washed over the crowd and increased to the dramatic climax, this heart is breakin’.

Something of note was that the visuals behind the band added to the experience, it was something truly awesome just to watch while the band were playing and it added a whole new element to the show. The first single off the new album So Haunted got a great response with the crowd screaming “All these satellites, satellites, satellites orbiting you and me”. A song like this demonstrates the great beauty of Cut Copy’s music; it’s the simplicity with which is constructed that makes it so incredibly catchy and easy to sing along to, yet it never comes across as cheesy, which is in itself an art.

The show flowed perfectly just like their albums, as many of the interlude tracks on the album were also played between songs in the show so there was always something happening. With about twenty minutes left the band played what is easily their biggest song, Hearts on Fire. This track was one of the best released last year, and I could guarantee you would have heard it at one stage. Watching the bass player break out the saxophone for the epic solo was my personal highlight of the night for me. Other well known songs played throughout the night included Time Stands Still, Future and Lights and Music. It was after this that the band left the stage but the stage lights remained on, signaling an encore. My friends and I were guessing as to what they would close with and there was a genuine buzz around the venue in anticipation of the return. Five minutes later they began the encore with my favourite song off their new album Feel The Love, and the crowd most certainly did. The crowd’s energy rose one more level as they knew this incredible journey would be over very soon.

The final song they played was long time favourite Saturdays, Dan yelled out “Sydney!” one last time and the crowd erupted screaming the lyrics right till the end. Cut Copy took a bow, thanked the crowd and the lights went down, the eclipse was over and Cut Copy showed that along with The Presets and Midnight Juggernauts, they really are a cut above the rest of Australian indie/dance.

Amazing show... Proof that Cut Copy have not only progressed beyond the amazing "Bright Like Neon Love" but that they have matured as a live act... I've seen them a dozen times and didn't think their BDO 06' set could be topped... I was wrong
