What a way to raise some money for a great cause! You’d think that with all the road closures and 250,000 pilgrims sleeping over at the racecourse, that Sydney would have shut down for the night. “Never fear!”, I hear you party people say.

Ruby Rabbit was the centre of this Starlight Foundation fundraiser, and the heartbeat of the funkiest funky house tunes on this Saturday night. Rolling in at 9pm I was overwhelmed by the sound coming from the decks tucked in under the stairs. A steady crowd had gathered and I moved quickly over to the tunes being drilled out of the speakers. Clint McLean was doing his thang, and weren’t we happy about it. Running under the name Tango, I soon discovered this DJ was new to the scene – not that you would have known and I was thankful for his innovative and carefully thought out journey of phat beats and well-rounded mixes. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for this guy in future.

Robbie Santiago was next, and spilled out some huge tunes. By midnight my feet were burning – but I didn’t care! It had been so long since I heard some of these anthems that I just wanted to dance on and on and on. So did the rest of the crowd for that matter. By this time there were people everywhere and dancing was the order of the evening. Keli Hart, Bryce and Steve Play all thumped out great sets, and there were so many “woo hoos” and whistles I’d stopped counting hours before.

I have never been a massive fan of Ruby Rabbits as a venue. It’s kinda small and a little hard to negotiate when any sort of crowd gathers to mingle. Upstairs is no better and I seem to find myself stuck in a corner or up against a banister before too long. The evenings visual entertainment usually comes down to watching people negotiate the steepest stairs in clubbing history after a few frosty beverages. Saturday night was a little different however, and I think it was due to the fact that the crowd were all smiles and up on their feet instead of doing the mingle thing.

Because of You raised some $3,000 that night – congratulations guys!!! Not only did you manage to ensure that we all had a wow of a time, but we also left with a warm fuzzy feeling knowing we had contributed to making a deserving kids dream come true – I’ll dance to that anyday! Party people – keep your eyes peeled and your party pants at the ready, Because of You is sure to make a huge come back and you’d be crazy to miss it.
