“Darkness everyone, darkness is spreading” as Dave Chapelle said when he famously sent up Rick James. Dark sets, it seems, are on the rise, and Mr Timothy added to the phenomenon when he dropped by The Bedroom on the Gold Coast last Friday. This was definitely not your average sunshine filled happy house set, as Mr Timothy instead delved into the darker side of his musical personality.
A podium in front of the DJ console had one punter in particular moving for a full two hours non stop, keeping to Mr Timothy’s beat like the proverbial Energizer Bunny. The genius of a DJ like Mr Timothy is that he has the ability to keep punters well and truly on the brink, building them up and leveling it out across his set, instead of one giant rush early in the piece. Having developed a lot of respect and a grass roots following amongst punters on the Gold Coast, Mr T has been a regular visitor over the years. I asked him after his set when he’d return, and he replied “I am due back in just two weeks!” So get ready for another night of deep beats. Watching him throughout the set you can tell Mr T plays music how he wants to hear it, and the side effect of that is you get a crowd on the dancefloor who absolutely love what they’re hearing.
The room really hit the ignition point when he dropped two of his own remixes in a row. ‘I Don’t Think That You Know’ feat. Nat Dunn (T-Funk 12” mix) and ‘Uninvited’ feat. Bailey Tzuke (Mr. Timothy Remix). Going from dark to funky at times, this was a night that we thankfully won’t have to wait too long to relive.
