Meat Katie is no stranger to Australian shores. Visiting here at least once a year from his hometown in the UK, he’s always well received. With a new single under his belt, and a new two-disc mix on the way, Ministry of Sound’s Sessions compilation, it was high time for a return visit.

There is a good reason that Meat Katie has such a solid following down under, and why he kept the dancefloor rocking all the way through his set on Friday. Although known to most for his breakbeat expertise, his show at Miss Libertine was a much more varied combination of breaks, tech-funk and even tribal house and minimal. Proof, perhaps, that Meat Katie is always experimenting with new sounds.

One thing remains consistent with this man though – he is a master at bringing the crowd up, then dropping them down, then bringing them right back up again. And he does it, over and over again. He cleverly plays with the audience so they are always begging for more and always waiting for that next beat to be dropped. His set was over too quickly and as he grinned from ear to ear (as he always seems to do!), happy punters reached out to shake his hand, obviously fulfilled after another fix of Meat Katie.

Following Meat Katie was Infusion’s Jamie Stevens (who was spotted earlier on in the night head-banging in the crowd, and was also spotted at Meat Katie’s gig a couple of years ago at Brown Alley. The assumption here is that they are friends!). Unfortunately, I didn’t stick around for the DJ set from Stevens, but everyone else seemingly did.

This was another quality night at Miss Libertine. I’m sure Meat Katie will be back in no time. Take a listen to inthemix’s 1 hour promo mix from Meat Katie for a little taste of what his show at Miss Libertine was like.
