After a long cold winter, spring has finally arrived and what better way to celebrate with the appropriately named event – Spring Breakdown! Presented by Eclipse, the line-up boasted local talents Jayar, Supermarket (playing live), Batch and Well Being, and from Melbourne young gun Same O with live drum & bass act K-Oscillate.
Arriving early to the Crown & Sceptre I was looking forward to the diverse music tonight. First up, spinning his deep, dubstep goodness, was Redline Dubstars’ Jayar. Well known in the scene for presenting regular dubstep parties, this talented and dedicated DJ has certainly been busy playing the unique genre on a regular basis all around town. He’s been working feverishly to promote such a distinctive sound. The courtyard was brimming with punters enjoying a night out with friends. Rain started to fall unexpectedly, however this did not deter fans from arriving to fill the venue.
Next up was Adelaide’s own Supermarket. This duo, Dan Monceaux and Emma Sterling, are recognised for their creative audio-visual displays. A large screen courtesy of Lumaluxe adorned the wall in the main room, displaying creative and innovative visuals all in tune to the background of funky beats. Following on was Melbourne’s Same O. At only 22 years old it’s crazy to consider that the talented dubstep DJ has been spinning tunes since he was 14. He has made a splash on the Melbourne’s circuit and is one of the founders of Rollin Deep, a Melbourne dubstep event and radio show on Kiss FM. Excited to be over in Adelaide and displaying his obvious passion for this genre, dubstep enthusiasts watched from the outskirts of the dancefloor, saving their energy for what was to come.
After the dubstep component of the night was complete two of Adelaide’s well known drum & bass DJs, B@ch and Well Being, made their way onto the stage to blast forth some syncopated mayhem. By this time the crowd had increased and they were certainly in the party mood. Most took to the dancefloor to let loose, and B@ch had a massive smile on his dial from start to finish. His partner in crime, Well Being aka Alexander Holland, has released tunes on UK labels Zen and Red Mist, as well as local Adelaide imprint 5158 records. Both DJs bopped in time with the beats, showing that they obviously love the genre. At the end of the day having fun it what it’s all about, and both boys most certainly did! Dropping the original ABC by the Jackson 5 amongst the drum & bass beats, followers ran to the floor for a jive.
The crowd was definitely pumped by this stage and ready for the main act, K-Oscillate. The 3-piece, hailing from Melbourne, was here to unleash their new EP ‘Unity’, released through Infinity Records (incidentally, K-Oscillate’s own label!) Vocalist Hugo arrived on stage with intensity and energy, jumping around in time with the beats and belting out lyrics. With Niko on the keyboard adding an arrangement of synthesised sounds, and Matt on the drums and also adding vocals, I was astounded by the collection of tunes the band produced. Their sound is raw and edgy, and they perfectly execute drum & bass rhymes and rhythms. Belting out their new tracks, including a unique remix of ‘Message In A Bottle’, this band certainly know how to perform and keep the audience alive and wanting more.
The talent displayed tonight spoke for itself. The Sceptre itself wasn’t rammed with punters, but a healthy crowd throughout the night was on hand spread across the famous beer garden, front bar and main dance room, and it left plenty of room to dance and drink (not having to wait too long at the bar is always a good thing!) Another fantastic night filled with awesome tunes, awesome people and good times. Word on the streets is that K-Oscillate will be back in town for another show in the near future, so keep your eyes peeled!
