OK, perhaps I’ve been living in a box (and I probably have) but until last week I had never heard of DJ/producer Deepchild. And you know what? I’m glad I hadn’t, because I might not have been as surprised by his performance as I was. Promoting his new album Departure at Sugar on Saturday night, this was the perfect setting for sounds such as his.
Personally I was very moved by what this guy had to say with his music. A lot of emotion and soul undoubtedly goes into his productions. He’s a man driven by passion for what he does, and not only can you hear it in his music but in his presence on stage. There was not one moment where he wasn’t jumping to his own groove. Upon meeting Rick he proved to be a very laid back character, your typical Aussie male dressed in thongs and jeans, with a hint of Buddhism perhaps? The only reason I say this is that he bowed his head very politely as we parted ways. Not only is he a great talent, but a humble one at that. Apparently based in Berlin at the moment, he is originally from Australia’s east coast and has a long list of accolades to his name. He has played alongside industry greats such as Richie Hawtin, Green Velvet, Trentemoller and Jeff Mills to name a few, and has remixed for artists such as Booka Shade. He’s definitely up there with the big names in the business, his live sets ranging from smooth and subliminal to deep, mind-twisting soundscapes that kept me interested for the duration.
I get bored quite easily when it comes to music, so to catch my attention he must have been doing something right. One thing that didn’t quite work for him was the time slot. I think his style may have been better suited to a little later in the evening as the crowd started to pick up towards the end of his set. Saturday night in the city was a little mediocre though, and clubbing these days just isn’t what it used to be.
All in all was a good night. Sugar, as usual presents a great vibe and a friendly atmosphere. The staff are always courteous and the drink prices aren’t over the top. If you haven’t been yet, there do yourself a favour on any Friday or Saturday night as the entertainment is consistently high-shelf.

i love this guy, but didn't catch the show... sorry to hear the joint wasn't rammed and jumping. Last time I saw him was at Adelaide Festival of the Arts, at the outdoor venue they set up by the riverside. I've also heard him on the dub FX with Sydney band Entropic. Nuff respect.
