Recently I’d begun to think that Sydney was seriously lacking something in its clubbing culture, a place that people could go to just enjoy and soak up the music because of the effort put into providing a unique clubbing experience for the punters. One that could be compared to other well-known clubs around the world, and we could put in our trust to know our money is going to be well spent. I can now put my qualms to rest, as finally someone read my mind and built an amazing club that follows those exact guidelines. And it kicks arse.

Not only is Nevermind an amazing club but the line-up for the next few months is also looking very nice indeed. This night was a very special night in particular, as Deepchild was launching his new album Departure, and letting his unique blend of techno and quirky house loose on the shiny new Funktion One system. I arrived at the club towards the end of the smooth, deep house sounds of Simon Caldwell’s set. He was playing the kind of music that lifts your heartbeat to match the groove. It had a really nice laidback feeli to it and was very appropriate for the early time slot. I couldn’t pick any of the tracks, but it was a perfect soundtrack for my first stroll into the club.

I noticed the attention to detail that’s been put into pretty much every aspect of the club. The layout has been very well designed, with ample space and a sufficient amount of cosy looking places to sit and have a drink. It also features three different bars to help ease queuing times for beverages, and they’re all very tempting (especially the Absolut cocktail bar.) The lighting is perfect, the murals on the wall are pleasing to the eye and the DJ booth looks like it’s about to launch off into space. I can’t praise this place enough, so how about I get back to talking music.

After Simon Caldwell’s fuzzy feeling set, Schwa (head honcho of Beef Records) stepped up and took control of the decks, instantly moving proceedings a few notches towards the techier side of house music. Things really started to happen on the dancefloor as the more jumpy members of the crowd finished their drinks and took their places across the glowing, polished timber. Schwa was ripping out some very dark tech house, and being my favourite type of music I was grinning from ear to ear, and then he decided to strip it back a bit and played some lighter upbeat stuff to move into Deepchild style territory. One track that perked my ears up was Sebo K’s melodic techno number Far Out.

It was then time for Deepchild to start his live set, and instantly he kicked off with some very chunky tech house of his own creation. The whole dance floor had completely filled up by this point which was great, as it had been looking a bit quiet before. The sound had been cranked a little more too, and was sounding absolutely amazing at only around twenty percent volume. The Function One system, when tuned correctly, is by far the best system on the planet, as you can hear every single detail in its highest clarity. Nevermind has certainly put it to good use. I really enjoyed the rest of Deepchild’s set, and am really looking forward to his new album now from what I heard of his new material.

By this time my legs had completely had it, and it was time to head home. It was very tempting to stay as Nathan Mclay had just started and was playing some really awesome tunes too. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I will definitely be coming back to Nevermind as soon as possible for some more quality clubbing!
