The ever surprising new trance night Progression Project delivered its most recent instalment this weekend just gone presenting two gigantic names from the global trance scene. Playing on the night were Kyau & Albert (Germany), The Viceroy (UK), Scott Richardson, Imperial and Nathan Cryptic. The event was held at a relatively un-used venue near Central Station called Tailors which has recently been refurbished. The Kyau & Albert duo consists of two feisty Germans that have produced a stack of massive club anthems and memorable remixes including: Made Of Sun, Velvet Morning, Walk Down, Kiksu and Are You Fine? An impressive fact about their production is that all the male vocals used throughout the many release come from none other than Albert himself! The duo are also responsible for founding one of the most respected trance labels Euphonic and have recently released their debut artist album titled Here We Are Now. The Viceroy is yet another rapidly rising star in the global trance scene. He shot to fame after being selected as resident DJ by London’s number 1 club night The Gallery at Turnmills as part of their 2006 Nu Breed series of nights.
On the night we arrived at the venue half way through Scott Richardson’s set which was an excellent warm-up set setting the atmosphere perfectly leading up to midnight. He played a great mix of progressive trance and solid tech tunes all tightly mixed and delivered with a smile. Some of the highlight tracks from his set included Deadmau5 Not Exactly, Push The Legacy (Mat Zo Remake), Nic Chagall Sky Blue and One Republic Apologize (Sander van Doorn Remix). Next up the German duo took to stage kicking off with their trademark melodic trance sound in the first hour much to the crowds delight. Then for the next three hours Kyau & Albert simply destroyed the place keeping the crowd in the palm of their hand the whole set with predominantly tight mixing and simply infectious presence behind the decks.
In the second hour they beefed up the vibe by laying down some of the huge new tech trance from all the gold being released at the moment interspersed with many of their massive productions and remixes. The last hour was simply magic, jam packed full of melodic and vocal anthems including U2 Beautiful Day which created an amazing vibe on the dance floor and finishing with 7 Skies, Are you Fine?. Throughout the set Albert would also sing some of the vocals for their tracks live which was a highlight. The finale was even more epic than the vibe built up during the set with the boys slamming down their remix of Velvet Morning as the final track of the night resulting in absolute mayhem with the crowd singing along to the lyrics and many hands being thrown into the air.
As the duo closed up to massive applause and thanked the crowd The Viceroy stepped up to continue the onslaught of solid tunes. He kicked off with some huge uplifting sound that really stepped up the intensity of the night. Unfortunately many people starting making a move home including ourselves however from all reports the rest of the night continued to rock until closing time.
Overall it was fantastic evening of quality tunes and an amazingly up for it crowd with the fans at the front knowing all the words and sounds in each of Kyau & Alberts big tunes. The night lived up to its name by progressing the music policy throughout the night starting off on a progressive trance vibe and slowly building to the winding uplifting trance laid down towards the end of the night. Well done to the Progression Project crew for another top night and props to the crowd for getting into the music and generally looking like they were having am amazing time the whole night! Venue was essentially just a pub, with pool tables, pokies, outdoor area and plenty of seating and dancing space but did the job fine in my opinion. The sound on the night was quite good and the drinks prices were excellent. For $20 this was a bargain and has left me definitely looking forward to the next one!
