In a gig that no doubt made Melbourne fearful of loosing its indie rock/dance punk crown, Sydney’s Cassette Kids tore through town leaving behind a sweat-drenched, hysteria-crazed crowd howling for more. Having just started their first nationwide headline tour for the launch of their self-titled album, Cassette Kids are eager to show Australia what the Sydney scene is all about.
Their rakish yet high octane performance left Ding Dong in a near state of disrepair, with the crowd surging to Katrina’s siren voice. Likened to a Ladyhawke meets the lovechild of the Klaxons and YYYs, Cassette Kids have a heavy, yet rhythmic disco punk beat, with a slight ‘new rave’ element that makes you want to run around the Botanic Gardens on acid.
Their stage presence is warming and leaves you with a feeling similar to having just seen your best mates’ band play with your girlfriend on vocals. They’re mesmerising, and it leaves you wondering how a band like this hasn’t happened before. The relaxed atmosphere that Katrina, Daniel D, Daniel S and Jacob have with each other on stage presents a bandship (if I may make up such words) that definitely goes back to the days when they were just doing the music thing for fun.
With their charming good looks, mischievous grins and powerful performances, Cassette Kids are sure to have clubs packed around the country, and they’ll create a fracas that the only logical way of subduing is to watch them again. Thankfully, they are. They’re back for Stereosonic this Saturday, so for the love of tapes, see them there or hound their Facebook for a side show!
