New Perth party promoters Ignition teamed with their Bourgeois Bogan heroes to throw a first of its kind ‘End of Uni’ party at the OBH back bar/beer garden. Usually the haunt of cowboys and real bogans, the OhBee back bar was to play host to the pretty young things of Perth with the event mostly selling out before the night with just a couple of door sales for early arrivers. Boombox duties were being fulfilled by two flavours of the moment – French disco house experimentalist Joakim and American electro duo LA Riots.
Unfortunately the weather gods were not shining on the evening and the warm afternoon sunshine was replaced by rain and wind, and by 8 o’clock it was cold, wet and stormy. Though this did nothing to quell the jovial mood of all in attendance with the positive vibes of another uni year finished buoying the crowd. It was a young and good looking crowd who were out to get loose on the first Saturday night after exams. Warming the crowd was one of the allocated BB regulars Hickey and
SooperSoopweemTeem and they were doing a good job with some nice party house and electro that had the dancefloor moving and swaying just like the tarp it was residing under.
Joakim took the decks after setting up his laptop and Serato and shifted a gear back, stripping the tunes back to some nice rhythms over 4/4 beats. Joakim looked like a French version of Graham Coxon with messy hair, typical t-shirt jeans combo and thick framed glasses. He kicked things up a notch, dropping his own remix of *Cut Copy*’s Hearts on Fire and steadily increasing the tempo to the crowd’s delight. Apart from some heavy squalls and showers, the wet dancefloor held its numbers. Joakim’s own remix of DJ Mehdi’s recent disco bomb Pocket Piano was a highlight and complemented by some shrewd mixing and track selections including some Dizzee Rascal and a very tidy mashup of M83 and Aphex Twin. Kicking on with some more minimal type disco, the little hand tick-tocked its way to 11 and there was still no sign of the yankee duo.
About 15 minutes later one half of the Riots arrived at the decks to try and make the most of his minimal time left and immediately maximised the sound, throwing down some chunky bassline electro, including the new Tiga single Mind Dimension which will surely be in every electro DJ’s crates over the summer. Unfortunately for the crowd and the Rioters, things promptly shut down at midnight before the singe Riot had a chance to show his game behind the decks. Nevertheless, it seemed to be a very enjoyable night for all who attended and let us hope the grey-haired party pooper patrol of Perth don’t let their ‘not-in-my-backyard’ attitude prevent future parties from being held in different spots such as the OBH, as this was certainly an enjoyable and different evening out.
