Once again the glad rags were on and the hair was puffy, and it was 11pm by the time we got into the city. The streets were covered in people ready to dance the night away. The evening started out fairly eventful, with us having an argument with the car park attendant. Can you believe that if you drive into a car park and can’t find a space, then try to get out in 4 minutes you still have to pay? Yes readers, this is true! Anyway, we carried on with it until we got bored, paid the fee and left.

We finally got to Roxanne Parlor after walking down a smelly alley and passing through Charlton’s karaoke, hearing some horrible screeching singing along the way. Sauntering through the doors of Roxanne I immediately noticed the bright self titled neon light, the big suave looking couches and the 70s décor about the place; chic shabby is how I would describe it. Local DJ Logan Baker was throwing out some grindy tech house/clectro tunes, including ‘Show Me Love’ by Mobin Master and ‘Dance With Me’ by Dizzee Rascal. To be honest, I felt kinda sorry for him and the others that were playing that night as we were the only ones there apart from the bar staff and a guy on roller skates.

At 11:30 local legend Boogs hit it off with some flowey minimal tech house vibes. The sound was OK, but not his best set by any means as there were some sound issues. None the less he had me having a boogie at the bar, and slowly a few people began to wander in, dancing around a bit. However, I don’t think there were any more than 50 people in there at any one time. Chew Fu Phat, founder of the BZMDC label; widely known for his talent for turning thumping hip hop into banging electro appeared on stage at 1:30. He threw out some slamming hot numbers, including Jackson 5, Snoop Dogg and Kanye West. Chew Fu Phat has a great sound and would be fab at a festival like Parklife or Stereosonic, but tonight the vibe was lacking and it impacted on his set as a result.

We had a great night with the music, but a better promoted event might have led to a bigger crowd to see these three awesome DJs. Roxanne is a great location for a gig like this, with a big dancefloor, couches if you need to rest your tired feed and really friendly staff. They make great drinks!
