A modest but enthusiastic crowd turned out at Shape on a Thursday night to take in the punk funk rhythms of Danish trio WhoMadeWho, who made a splash with their 2008 performance at Future Music Festival. Cooler than a polar bear in winter, the boys from Copenhagen are curiously on tour just before they release their second (or third if you count the acoustic styled remix album Green Versions) LP entitled The Plot.
Arriving upstairs, an imposing piece of clattering mayhem was taking place on stage with new WhoMadeWho drummer Kalle smashing his kit and howling like a wolf at the full moon. It was quickly ascertained he was playing solo under his Kalle’s World Tour moniker and seemed to be having the time of his life doing so. A the start of a fresh ‘track’, the mystery started to unravel with Kalle using loop pedals to create his experimental percusso-jams. First it was a drum beat, then a vocal loop, next a bass rhythm and lastly some more drums. It was a very entertaining start to the evening and got even more entertaining when he proceeded to take a power drill, from what one can only assume was his tool box, and with a bend piece of metal inserted as a drill bit, started playing what can only be described as a drum roll on his floor tom. There is a first time for everything.
After the building site mayhem of the previous act, disco-spinning duo Canyons took the foot off the gas and eased it into ghost gear for a little bit of sophisticated boogie. Slipping some slabs of wax on to the turntables, the ex-Perthians who now reside in Sydney kicked things off with a mix of old and new disco that had a few heads nodding and backsides shuffling to the addictive grooves. LSB’s Locomotion made an appearance with its filter piano loop, synthesised bassline and chopped up porn-like vocals making it a standout.
WhoMadeWho arrived with a minimum of fuss in their trademark black and white robes at about half an hour before Friday, said hello and kicked off with recent single TV Friend. Its repeating chorus of ‘No, no, no, no, no, no-no-no-no nooo’ breaking up the new-wave like deadpan vocals and of course a funky as hell bassline. Next up was some groovy vocoder melodies before the opening bars of Out The Door started to kick along as did the inhibition of a fair chunk of the crowd with one young lady with blue hair busting out some chicken-leg moves that Elvis would have been proud of. Guitarist Jeppe Kjellberg starts confusingly playing his axe with a trumpet (an unnecessary and cheapening gimmick) before bassist Tomas Hoefding hops into the crowd to ask about how fans days have been. Playing a new song with Kalle back on the drill drum, they then move into the first of three covers, starting with Digitalism’s Idealism before moving to their well known cover of Benny Benassi’s Satisfaction which had the crowd suitably excited. Finishing with their WhoMadeWho version of ACDC’s WhoMadeWho, the trio were done short and sharp in a shade off 45 minutes. A thoroughly enjoyable show for a school night.
