Adelaide was graced with Roni Size at HQ on Thursday night. Arriving just before the mix master graced the stage, I was welcomed by lovely friendly door staff, a floor full of dancers and five police officers. Would have been a boring night for them ‘cause there was absolutely no trouble to be had, only music enthusiasts piled into the room. Although the venue wasn’t packed like your typical Saturday night, something that was great about this particular night was that it wasn’t just people hanging around the bars staring at the dancefloor like something was supposed to appear there. Instead, the people there were on a mission – to dance to some broken-beat wonder.
The stage was lit up with lasers as well as amazing graphics over the LCDs. Anime battle scenes, crazy demons and anything else a 14 year-old boy could imagine was there, but added to the performance. Following local boy Weez, Roni was on stage by 12:30, accompanied by MC Stamina. Scratching it up this legend sporting the dreads mixed up chilled breaks, into harder classics, remixes of electro favourites, and even threw in a dubstep remix – it seems to be a trend from the UK throwing that style in because Prodigy also did that at their recent show. Teasing us with about 20 seconds of ‘dirty beats,’ soon followed was the classics ‘white stripes’ lick. All of this would be near impossible without the apple lappy, CDjs and vinyls all ready to go.
Speaking about movement and direction, MC Stamina certainly had the legs and the lyrics. He helped us relive classics like Ready or Not, recent hits like Girls in Line For The Bathroom and We Are Your Friends. He himself was the friendly fellow. Reminding us how great the prodigy were during their recent tour and that even the big time fellows appreciate the old. To finish, the deep sounds of the double bass in ‘brown paper bag’ was an awesome finish to his set. Let hope we get to see him again and that like the Prodigy, he won’t want to retire!
