A Company of Strangers brings together an eclectic mix of international performers including Paul Capsis, Le Gateau Chocolat and Lady Carol, and they’re helmed by Martin Martini, a kind of twisted ringmaster. Also featured each night is a special secret guest, who on the night I attended was Sveta Dobranoch.
Martin Martini opens the show with a macabre and slightly mad performance, along with an intro for the evening to come, “a show for strangers performed by people who are strange”. What follows is probably the most outrageous and at the same time adorable performer I have ever seen – Le Gateau Chocolat. At the Fringe last year with “Empress Stah”, Le Gateau has returned in all his figure-hugging lycra glory, and with a voice that spans everything, from opera and musicals to, ahem, Rhianna’s ‘Umbrella’.
Next up comes Lady Carol, an Irish ukulele playing diva whose beautiful and gut-wrenching version of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ brought tears to many eyes in the audience. Sveta Dobranoch also appears, slinky and seductive, dressed – at first at least – in a large fur coat and matching Russian hat. She teases the audience, gets up close and very personal with some of them, and makes her accompanist on piano – Matthew Carey – wear a very silly and very cute furry bear hat.
Then it was time for the performer I had been waiting to see all night, Paul Capsis. His versatile voice, and charming persona bewitches the crowded and appreciative Spiegeltent audience as he channels Janis Joplin so accurately you don’t believe your eyes (or ears!) This is an event you don’t want to miss. Audiences leave the show beaming, touched and wiping away tears. It’s open every night of the Fringe except Mondays, and it’s in the beautiful and enchanting Spiegeltent at the far end of the Garden of Unearthly Delights. Don’t miss out!
