Thee Bang Gang Deejays are Gus Da Hoodrat, Jamie Doom, Dangerous Dan, DJ Damage, Nolan Nolan and Ajax. Saturday brought Hoodrat and Doom, the most active members of Thee Bang Gang Deejays, to Shape for a night of decadent dancing.

Before Doom and Hoodrat would grace the decks, the Super Supreme Team played to a less enthused crowd. Some of their song choices, such as 1980s tracks, seemed lost on the very young crowd. Slowly the crowd filtered in. As the room filled, the excitement levels rose. Maybe the crowd was getting excited about the imminent arrival of Thee Bang Gang Deejays, but by the end of the Super Supreme Team set the crowd was fully into it.

I was a rather large fan of Light Sound Dance, Bang Gang’s 2007 mix CD. It had great tunes, great mixing and sounded fresh. However the follow up compilation, D is for Disco, E is for Dancing was a massive disappointment. Featuring terrible songs and worse mixing, songs were not properly mixed out and brought back in at random times, disrupting the tempo. Despite my feelings on their last release, one thing about Thee Bang Gang Deejays is they always create an amazing party.

Saturday night was my first opportunity to experience the new lighting rig that Shape installed downstairs. This is a much needed improvement, which enhances the dancing experience. It makes the area feel like a proper nightclub dancefloor rather than the backroom of some uni student’s party house. Hoodrat and Doom took full advantage of the extra atmosphere the lights proved, playing a fun set full of energy. A personal highlight was Hoodrat sporting a very sexy ponytail – I wonder if he can bring that into fashion?

Whereas downstairs Shape used to be unbearably hot, much has been done to fix this problem. I’m happy to say it’s a much more pleasant experience dancing down there. Shape continues to bring out entertaining DJs – and now with the added lighting rig things are set to get even bigger and better. Hickey closed off the proceedings, sending the dancers home with happy memories of a night full of dancing.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
