With my glad rags on and a belly full of Subway, following a loooong rollercoaster tram ride into the city that had me nearly throwing up, we finally made it to the ‘exotic’ part of the city, King Street. After falling flat on my face from the wet road we walked down a dark alley, flashed our ID’s and made our way up 5 flights of stairs.
Upon entry my first thought was “shit this place is tiny”, to then realize that looks can be deceiving. We quickly grabbed a drink and made ourselves comfortable on the big fluffy couches that went right around the dance floor; a great idea when you are there for a night of shaking your ass! Up first was Local act Dean Millson, known for his progressive beats. He dropped a few of those body-shaking bass tunes that make your body tremble with pleasure and eventually get you moving. It sucked a little bit for Dean as there wasn’t much of a crowd, however the people that were there seemed to really love what he had come up with.
Rollin Connection, another popular Melbourne act, came on at midnight and the countdown began for the headline act Andrea Bertolini. I hadn’t heard Rollin before, but I must say it got my party started! The crowd by now had started to arrive and Brown Alley stared to really bounce. There was another room off to the side that was playing some techno, not the kind of techno I like personally though – its heavily digita soundl was screeching in my ears, and had me running away as fast as I did when I saw Pauline Hanson’s nude pics in the paper that morning.
At around 1am, Italian stallion Andrea Bertolini (can you get any more Italian than that? Short of calling himself Tony Pepperoni, there’s not much more he could do highlight his Italian heritage) came on and did what he does best… Getting everyone moving. Phat bass lines, Massive build ups, and then bang it’s dropped, is what I loved about his set.
A great night with awesome music. I would have thought with an international as big and as talented as Andrea that he would have bought the crowds in more than he did; I think with some more promotions and advertising the night could have definitely packed out, although the people who were there seemed to be there for Andrea, which is great for him. While the festival-priced drinks were a bit unnerving ($10 for a corona is pretty steep!), it was otherwise a very chilled out and relaxed environment, where there’s room for you to sit down and rest after all the dancing. Also a big shout out to the old-school Melbourne Shufflers that were burning up the floor throughout the night!
