It is a wondrous evening, when once a month the Adicts crew bring to Brisbane quality break-beats, under the banner of Saturday night Breaks & Enter, at Empire’s Moon Bar. And this month’s headline act Micah has been the best of a brilliant bunch to date.
My night began with some serious bounce; as I walked into hear Verner spinning Coburn ’s We Interrupt This Program, a personal old school breakbeat favorite, although I was somewhat peeved to not have the full rendition, including the major break-down. I understand why DJs don’t always mix in a full track, but as a punter it annoys the heck out of me, waiting for the drop that never comes. Despite this minor gripe, I really enjoyed Verner’s time on the decks; I really rate this local boy.
Next up on the wheels of steel was Butterz n Sangers who played a set for the B-boys to break too. The breaking was exceptional, however after some time I think punters were over it and wanted to reclaim the dance floor. The last track to get a spin was the Super Mario Brothers breaks remix that I heard Nick Thayer spin a few Breaks & Enter ago, however this time the levels were markedly out of whack.
Then it was time for the man of the night, Perth’s #1 DJ Micah, and he played a flawless electro leaning break-beat set, that had the dance floor heaving for the full hour that he was on. Micah read and worked the crowd, like I have seen few DJs do, although I have been privy to see him do so each and every time he plays out. People that didn’t even know who or what they were rinsing out to had a mad time. It is an impressive trait to inspire Guido’s and music aficionados alike to spontaneously clap their hands in the air. All the tracks were seamlessly spun, and I only managed to track-spot Salt n Pepper ’s Push It (Crookers/Ursula 1000/Krafty Kutz remix) , from what was otherwise a mostly non-vocal set.
I must admit that I was mightily surprised to see how short Micah’s set was, when I read set times posted on the Empire wall. Hailing from Perth I am use to (or perhaps usually spoilt) with a three hour long journey into breaks. The unusually short set of one hour nonetheless meant Micah banged out some hardcore electro breaks that kept the feet, arms and body moving. One couldn’t help but break out all the moves and the thought of leaving the d-floor to grab a drink didn’t even cross my mind, nor most others by the look of it. I also must give a shout and big props to the (former) Perth crew massive who rocked up to see their favorite DJ, and were mightily rewarded on making the mission.
Following Micah ’s mad set was Devastatin’ Dave on the decks, and with the first track being spun the Kings of Leon, Use Somebody remix meant it was time to call it a night for me and my crew. Thank you very much to the Adicts crew for bringing in top-notch breaks. I hope to see it continue well into the future.
