Onelove has been banging around for so long now, you may feel that you’ve been there too many times before and you’ve heard everything they have to offer. That said, I must confess I was a Onelove virgin up until last weekend, and with the tempting offer of catching Australia’s own superhero DJ Kid Kenobi (currently on his Klub Kids national tour) it seemed like as good a time as any to go.
We arrived at 11.30pm and there was a fair queue outside pushing and shoving to get in. A quick word with the door staff saw us bypass the melee and head up the wide staircase to the thumping main room. Walking into the sound of Laidback Luke’s Show Me Love, the crowd was building rapidly as the warm up DJ greased the wheels for the big night ahead. Making our way to the bar past the crowds of girls in skintight tube dresses and stiletto heels, we grabbed a few beers, claimed our spot on the edge of the dance floor, and hustled along with the dayglo canvas shoe wearing boys to Ron Carroll’s annoyingly catchy Walking Down The Street With My Nikes On.
12.30am and Kid Kenobi arrived behind the cramped looking DJ console, dressed in a bow tie, white shirt and suit jacket. He started by punching out a broken up version of Armand Van Helden’s You Dont Know Me with Sandy B’s Make The World Go Around, and he was ably backed up by his sidekick MC Shureshock. The listeners responded with whoops of applause as Kenobi spliced in more current hits and Shureshock harmonised with him, finishing on a high with a belting live performance of San Francisco by City Life. A master of the quick mix, Kenobi is awesome at dropping in short segments, breaks and acapellas to keep his sets sounding fresh and maintain the momentum. The amazing thing is that it works so seamlessly and keeps you moving constantly.
By 3am the room was totally rocking, Kid Kenobi was still hammering out the tunes and people milled about excitedly all over the place while in the background projectors screened adverts for Onelove’s upcoming CD release. Not too long after my ears felt completely pounded and so I called it a night. Upon exiting the queue was still huge outside, a sure sign of just how popular Onelove continues to be. It may seem rather commercial at first, but if get past the hype it’s clear that what matters most at Onelove is the music. Maybe I’ll give one of those CDs a listen now too?
