I knew there was a reason I was looking forward to the Sunday of the Easter long weekend… SHE at Bungalow 8! Needless to say it did not disappoint, and the star studded line up pulled out all stops to ensure we were grooving the day away, well into the early hours on the morning! Situated right at King Street Wharf, Bungalow 8 was the perfect setting for this SHE extravaganza, and upstairs you even had The Loft offering every imaginable cocktail you could want.
Beginning at 2pm might have seemed a little ambitious, and even when we strolled in at 5pm the crowd was certainly thin on the ground. Most were happy to be sitting around chatting the afternoon away. Upstairs Mark Us was pretty much playing for himself, while Tass was throwing out some groovy tunes in the main arena, but the dancefloor was empty bar a couple of shoe shufflers. I grabbed a drink downstairs and was quite happy to be chatting with friends as the sun went down over Darling Harbour. Paul Hatz pres Sound Famiglia (a live 3 piece band) came on to entertain at 6pm, and this is where I have my only criticism of the party. The DJ was fantastic and sent out some fab old school vibes, after all a bit of Bob Sinclar and Paul Mac never hurt anyone, but I don’t think the keyboard player was listening to the same song as the rest of us. By the end of it all I couldn’t wait for Dave 54 and the SHE Soundsystem. I had a quick detour upstairs to hear Danny De Sousa, and thank god he was playing music to my ears. Danny is a bit of a club tart in Sydney and he really knows how to blend different styles of house, disco and Latin to create a great sound. There’s no bums on seats when this guy is on, let me tell you that.
At 7:30 I made sure I had pole position on the dancefloor for Dave 54 and crew. I love it when a DJ clearly enjoys what he does, and this guy was rocking out with the rest of us. By this time I was quite surprised at how many people had started to roll into the place. With Easter egg hunts obviously complete it was time to come out and play! I don’t think anyone sat down for the next hour and half, with hands raised in the air more often than not. Sending out some huge tunes and a few golden oldies, Dave fed off the energy right until the end. What a ride! By now I was very much excited about Joey Negro’s arrival. And arrive he did, in all his soulful house glory. The crowd went nuts and it was pretty hard to find a space on the dancefloor. This UK DJ is one of the best soulful spinners to grace the decks, and one of the founding faces of the UK scene. He’s responsible for more anthems than you can name and we all danced our little tooshes off. The crowd were fantastic and really embraced his journey. Joey’s compilations are huge and every serious house lover should have at least three in their collection by my estimations. We were very lucky to be present to see the master at work, and on such a beautiful night in a prime location. What could be better!?
Trying to catch my breath and gather my thoughts I looked at the time and Negro had extended his set, not that a single person in the place cared. I had missed Graham Cordery, but by the time I shot upstairs I could see that The Loft crowd had been loving him. I had come up to see Matt Caseli of Pacha Ibiza fame (lets face it, 11 years in the Funky Room has got to be some kind of record!) and I was not disappointed. Responsible for huge tracks like ‘Regina’s Sax Experience’ and ‘Sorprendiste’, it was a real honour to dance the wee hours of the morning with him. I rolled out of The Loft at 2:30am a shadow of my former self, wondering how anyone could have been anywhere else but here this Easter long weekend! Well done to SHE, I thank you from the bottom of my almost-worn-out dancing shoes.
