With Easter upon us, we’re inclined to indulge ourselves just a tad. Public holidays, too much chocolate, copious amounts of alcohol as well as being privileged to witness some of the best dance music acts in the world. Tonight was such an occasion: making a return to the metro for one of Fuzzy’s ever-enjoyable Killer events, I was quite excited. I had previously been to Killer to see M.A.N.D.Y play a four-hour set and prior to that had seen the legendary Booka Shade at one of Fuzzy’s parties featuring some of the world’s best underground sounds.
I arrived at about 10.45pm, and walking up the stairs I heard the distinct sounds of techno being played, I wasn’t expecting it because this was a Fuzzy event but I was certainly grateful. Dave Choe and Matt Aubusson were doing their best playing to a crowd of 3 people. Within minutes I heard the distinct bass lines of Loco Dice’s Pimp Jackson is Talking Now. This song is basically sex on a wavelength, for those who heard u know it’s all about “dis ‘n’ dat bullshit & blah blah”.
This was certainly a great way to start the night, but with no atmosphere in the sideroom I ventured into the main room to see Kato doing what he does best: playing his Baltimore, baile funk, mashup style with great success, managing to get the party thumping. The venue was filling up quite quickly at this stage, wirh the highlight of his set being the Jesse Rose remix of Ready for the Floor.I headed back to the side room to check out Simon Caldwell, and the dancefloor numbers had doubled to six people. Caldwell was continuing with some driving tech house, but again so little atmosphere so I ventured back to the other room to see Mark Murphy now gracing the decks. I found the next hour what I’d term rather uninspiring, and it would have made much better sense having Kato warm up for the similar-sounding Sinden. Instead Murphy dropped some electro songs, a few Crookers songs, a bit of mid-nineties dance cheese and then a few more Crookers songs. Wasn’t really doing much for me, but the crowd seemed to be enjoying it.
Sinden stepped up sporting his trademark cap, before removing it (now I’ve seen everything). He starting banging it out, dropping his most well known song Beeper but choosing to drop the Fake Blood remix, perhaps a nod to the man to follow. Everyone was going nuts, but the man I was most keen on seeing had also just started so I ventured across to the side stage where Trentemoller had the room in the palm of his hand. Brooding over the decks, he looked certainly intent with his set being primarily tech with smattering’s of electro throughout. The set flowed very nicely and a lot of the tracks had the unmistakable Trentemoller twist. Some of his tracks that were instantly recognisable included his remix of What Else is There, and he played an amazing remix of the beautifully haunting Moan, my personal favourite of his.
Quickly rushing between the two stages in an attempt to make sure I had all bases covered. I entered to hear Sinden play his remix of a very popular song right now Township Funk, this was the biggest “Oh F&*%” moment of the night so far with people losing it. One of the huge anthem’s of last year, Raven by Proxy, also got a fantastic response.
Up next was Fake Blood AKA Touché AKA Black Ghosts, a man that I was very interested in seeing. His electro rave anthem Mars was arguably the biggest commercial dance track of 2008 and injected some new life into the very, very, tired electro genre. The next 90 minutes blew me away and was actually quite surprising. Fake Blood’s set comprised of some fresh electro with that really driving, ravey sound, a’ la Mars. The place was heaving, with Fake Blood dropping increasingly heavy tunes, and then close to 4am the stadium sounds of his ever popular anthem started, and now it was truly the biggest “Oh F*&%” moment of the night. With the sound of the notorious elevator ding the crowd lost it, easily the best song of the night and it couldn’t be topped after that, at 4.10 he played his remix of the classic rock song Cold as Ice and then it was over.
Congrats to Fuzzy for putting on a great show, I had a fantastic time. Fake Blood stole the show and Trentemoller was every bit as amazing as I expected. The night was the highlight of my Easter break, not even the Easter Bunny himself could top it!
