The 25th of April celebrates the Australian New Zealand Army Corps or, the ANZACS. I am amazed that every generation has a special reason to respect and to never ever forget. Be it that we have lost someone in the past in a war, or that we have someone presently fighting in the Middle East. No matter who you ask, we all have our different reasons to drop our heads and pray. Lest we forget.
I chose to spend my cold and wet Saturday with a little bit of shopping, followed by a night of boogying at my favorite Melbourne night spot Ffour. Widely known for its delicious spread of music and the awesome lineup of locals that it tends to attract, Ffour is a place that every budding clubber or techno lover needs to experience. Some of my favorites’ set to play there included Dave Pham, Mike Callendar and Dean Millson. Ffour has two rooms, with the main space situated where there is a bar about 10 meters long, the dancefloor and some PVC couches to rest those aching feet on. It also has the suite, somewhat smaller than the main room and it tends to have the supporting acts playing in it.
After visiting the bar we took a quick walk to see Dean Millson hitting it up the suite. I first saw Dean only a few months ago at a Darkbeat event at Brown Alley and fell in love with his gritty electro sounds. There wasn’t much of a crowd, but he had the people that had showed up early shuffling their feet. Daniel Dreier started rolling out his Berlin house Beats at 11pm. When we first arrived there was no one on the dancefloor, but by 11:30 Dreier had the dancefloor full of Melbourne dance music lovers. His sound was very tribal with a stomping beats, and as midnight rocked around, his music started to get heavier, which really seemed to please the crowd. At 1am Dreier made his exit stage left, and Konrad Black entered stage right. Konrad, who started out in drum n’ bass, has carved out a niche in the dance world with a distinct sound that’s been famously described as featuring “huge hooks that I can walk away singing”. I had high hopes for Black, and he didn’t let me down. He threw out tracks like Medusa Smile and Draconia as well as a host of remixes, namely reworkings of Snax’s Honeymoon’s Over.
My legs were pretty sore by 2am, and I was ready to hit the sack. A pretty good night, great crowd and fabulous music. I think the 3am close may have turned a few punters off, I’m particularly a fan of staying until close, but I needed my beauty sleep anyway! Until next time Melbourne techno lovers. See you on the dancefloor!
