Void was absolutely packed out by midnight. Seriously, I haven’t been to such a heaving party in a long time. It felt like a rave, but in a good way, with a whole bunch of people getting into the thumping music and simply losing it. Like I’ve said before, when you go to a dubstep party in Sydney you simply don’t feel like you’re in the same city. Granted, there were a few scenesters hanging about tonight, but they were mostly there for comic relief, trying hard to move to the music. Meanwhile, some of the biggest guys out were gracing the floor in front of me, like swans on a lake, they made moving to dubstep seem almost effortless. They were a bit sweaty, of course, but so was everyone else.
The funniest thing about dancing to dubstep is, it’s easy. Let me explain. My flatmate made Void’s 2nd Birthday her first dubstep gig. She picked up the rhythm in minutes, and I swear at one point I looked over my shoulder to hear a guy squeal at his girlfriend. He pointed at my flatmate’s moves and told his girlfriend to dance like her. Brilliant! The venue, Phoenix, is pretty much a sweatbox, and for me that’s the appeal. When the heaving became too much it was good to be able to escape upstairs to Spectrum and get a bit of space, before gathering yourself and running back down. Phoenix gets everyone in nice and close, and makes every single move on the dancefloor felt. I stopped moving for five minutes to see what the DJ was up to and before I knew it I was getting kicked by the person sitting to the side of me. They were gesturing to keep on dancing. This was pretty amazing, I’d forgotten how involved a crowd can get. I’d forgotten about partying.
If you haven’t caught on, I spent most of the night downstairs in Phoenix. The headliners were playing there; Truth, The Others and Harmonic 313. They were really working the room. When Truth got up to play the space around me fell into a bassy abyss. Every few minutes a new bassline would hit, and bigger smiles would crawl across the crowd’s faces, mine included. Everyone started dancing harder and looser. The Others teased the crowd with big basslines and then some. Everyone was getting stupid to his set. Seriously, I have not seen a room full of people dancing like this since my short stint as a raver. And then of course Harmonic 313 was solid as always. It really was the carefree and sometimes uninitiated crowd at Void’s 2nd Birthday that made it such a great night. I can’t wait for the next party.
