The Tank Hotel was an ideal venue for the loud beats of the debut One Drop event, hosting two musical arenas, separated by a set of stairs. Downstairs, dubstep was spun earlier in the evening, with a notable performance from Brisbane ’s Rubba Sinka, a young up and coming Dubstep producer, displaying his musical wares. As the evening progressed, heavier drum and bass began working its way into the downstairs sets. The basement of the Tank Hotel has been very recently refurbished and provided an intimate space for getting down to the dark and dirty beats that were being thrown down. In the main room upstairs there was a mixture of jungle influenced, party and progressive breaks being spun, dependant on the particular DJs speciality. Well recognised MC, Sunny Dread lent his complimentary skills to good effect to a number of these fine breaks DJs.
I found myself spending the majority of the night in the lower stratosphere, perhaps due to my preference for the genre being played, and a quite a bit to do with the calibre of the DJs. I really enjoyed Erther ’s atmospheric set, and Mk Delta ’s smashing spinning that finished off the night. My one extended venture upstairs was well rewarded, with a killer breaks set by local boy Smotown, which had the few remaining folk floating about bouncing up and down to the likes of old school Stanton Warriors and a stand out Signal Drivers track Sticky Date Rerub, deftly mixed. It ’s great to see a DJ have top-notch technical skills and the ability to read a room and play to it.
The addition of the Bounce St Dancers with their unusually painted faces lent the evening some visual flair. And not to be outdone, plenty of the punters put on their own show and danced like nobody was watching.
It was a well organised event that could have perhaps done with more aggressive advertising, so as to lend the night a more jostling vibe; however, perhaps the long weekend meant there were fewer people about the place to drop in. Those in attendance who love their bubstep, breaks and drum n bass were well rewarded with a large dollop of all three genres. Watch out for the next One Drop event, with a bit of fine tweaking, this is sure to become a fine Brisbane institution.
