Touring Australia armed with his debut solo album What Do You Do If You Don’t, Berlin-based Jesse Rose and his production compadre Oliver $ stormed the booth of Brisbane’s GPO Hotel last Friday. With back-to-back sets from the pair, the GPO’s dancefloor was given a brilliantly potent dose of building house and groovy vocals, cut with thick heavy bending basslines.

Oliver $ was first to jump behind the decks and set towards building the modest crowd into full party mode. Oliver’s own tracks like Wake Up, Watcha Gonna Do and Hot Flash Vol.1 bought together some great stepping tech house beats and grooving melodies, followed by sudden drops of piano and vocals to keep everyone on their toes and heads in perpetual ‘bop’ mode. It was great to see the crowd dancing and stepping in a fashion that is truly analogous to the style of tracks Jesse Rose, Oliver $ and others of the Made to Play Label can proudly call their own.

Jesse Rose kicked off from his new album straight away with Don’t Forget My Name featuring Hot Chip. This had obviously been eagerly anticipated by the crowd as they celebrated its presence with great enthusiasm. Visibly loving it from behind the decks, Jesse Rose eagerly bopped away with his newly acquired dancefloor crew for the next hour and a half. Tastefully leaving the big well-known festival bangers at home and in the memories of Parklife past, this club set was all about an awesome new album of tracks mixed in with a fine selection of house, fidget and electro.

Album tunes like You’re All Over My Head and A Night At The Dogs created a fun fresh dancefloor experience as groovy vocal and disco house sections dropped away into thick dirty basslines. Unfortunately, the wonderful venue atmosphere was bought to a halt by a fight midway through Jesse’s set, causing the music to come to a complete stop. However with true professionalism and personality, Jesse dropping a different re-edit of Don’t Forget My Name , Touch My Horn and Puzique’s Don’t Go was more than enough to make our ears prick back up and smiles return. He was indeed on the ball!

This was definitely a great evening out. If you’re still asking yourself ‘what do you do if you don’t’, well Jesse Rose, Oliver $ and GPO will help you make up your mind!
